Discover India, the Great Rail way

India

The pristine whiteness of the Taj Mahal, the orange and black of a rare Bengal tiger, the pink city of Jaipur and the blue edifices of Jodhpur, the leafy green tiers of a fertile tea plantation; India is a veritable kaleidoscope of colours just waiting to be explored. And you can experience them in style and comfort on an escorted holiday with Great Rail Journeys, on an unforgettable adventure in a land which is both exotic and, in places, surprisingly familiar.

In this section we've gathered together all our tours to India, allowing you to discover exactly which adventure is right for you. From the backwaters of Kerala and the ancient wonders of northern India's Golden Triangle, to the dramatic mystery of the Himalayas.

“Fantastic organisation with minimal fuss.
India's Palace on Wheels & Ultimate Rajasthan

“The tour was absolutely excellent. The accommodation, the restaurants chosen, the itinerary, were all superb as were the guides everywhere.
India's Golden Triangle

“First time with Great Rail Journey as my usual single provider could only get me to Shimla as an add on and on my own. Have no interest in going to Rathambore for the tigers as I can see them at Chessington. Taj Mahal has been on a 50 year To Do list. Face timed with an Indian gentleman with his wife and 6 week old son. She was delighted when I came on the phone with a Namaste.
Grand Tour of India & Nepal

“Great experience but very tiring. We could have flown direct to |Amritsar and then taken a train back to New Delhi. We could in each city have stayed somewhere close to the sights so that we would not have needed to spend hours extra stuck in traffic jams as we tried to cross the cities.
Kerala & Exotic Southern India

“Excellent except flight arrangements with inconveniently timed layovers in Dubai prevent me giving 5 stars

Indian Trains

It's often the case on an escorted rail tour with Great Rail Journeys, that the train travel between towns and cities is as enjoyable and memorable an aspect of the tour as the destinations themselves. India is no exception. Enjoy the full range of Indian rail experiences on offer, from the convenient and reliable Shatabdi Express to the exalted journey offered by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

India's Highlights

Taj Mahal, Agra

The Taj Mahal, Agra

Perfectly framed by its immaculate gardens in the city of Agra, the iconic Taj Mahal is a sublime vision in polished white marble, with a sentimental history almost as captivating as the structure itself.

Amber Fort, Jaipur

Amber Fort, Jaipur

A short distance from the pink city walls of Jaipur lies the golden-hued Amber Fort, an extensive palace complex in the 16th century and now a well-deserved UNESCO site.

Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park

One of the best places in the world to spot wild tigers, lucky visitors to Ranthambore National Park can spy the elusive Bengal tiger basking in the sun or sauntering through the wilderness.

India's Culture

Indian culture and cuisine is widely known, yet little understood. Obviously for such a large country, there will be diversity as you travel from province to province but there are still few key factors to bear in mind.

Cuisine

India's cuisine has been shaped over centuries by different cultures and civilizations. Although every region in India has its own distinctive cuisine the common feature is the use of spices.

Traditions

Often-times in India, traditions are honoured through age-old festivals and holy days. Holi is the country's festival of colour, and is one of the biggest events in the calendar for Hindus.  Diwali is marked in late autumn on the night of a new moon, and is the Hindu festival of light.

Haggling in India

Indian markets have a thriving bargaining culture which is not just accepted, but welcomed. When negotiating with a street merchant never accept the first price you are offered, which could be ten or even twenty times the price they will settle for.
