Day 1 Lucerne

Arrival in Lucerne

Fly or rail from London to Zurich, transfer to Lucerne by rail and check into your hotel for the night.

When in Switzerland you have a half fare card. The Half Fare Card allows unlimited purchase of train, bus, boat and some cable car tickets at half price during your stay, should you wish to do anything else during your holiday in Switzerland other than mentioned in this itinerary, which is already included.

Depending on your arrival time, take the time to explore this pretty and popular town with its narrow cobbled streets and medieval frescoed buildings. An absolute 'must' is to walk across the 'Chapel Bridge' - Lucerne's famous landmark.

Day 2 Lugano

Journey to Lugano

Today, you will journey on The Gotthard Express to Lugano in the Ticino region, with its Mediterranean climate, by Lake steamer cruise and rail.

The Gotthard Express links two of Switzerland's most attractive regions: Central Switzerland and Ticino. The trip starts in Lucerne as you board the steamer for the 2½h cruise across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen on which you can watch sleepy bays and picturesque village glide by. The trip continues through the impressive Reuss Valley with its deep ravines and cliffs. The world famous Gotthard line swiftly climbs from 470 to about 1100 metres above sea level to finally enter the 15 kilometre long Gotthard tunnel - Europe's most important North/South gateway. After 10 minutes tunnel passage you will arrive in the Mediterranean climate of Switzerland's Italian speaking canton of Ticino. In the Leventina Valley, the Gotthard Express crosses breathtaking bridges and passes charming villages on its way to Bellinzona. Change here to continue your journey to Lugano where you will stay for the next two nights.

Day 3 Lugano

At leisure in Lugano

Today is a free day in Lugano. Enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere, stroll along the lakeside promenade or take a trip to Monte Bré or San Salvatore - make sure you take advantage of your included Ticino Ticket which offers free use of local buses and trains. Lugano Tourism organises free guided tours of varying themes throughout the summer. Check at the local office what is on offer on your free day.

Day 4 Bernina Express
Bernina Express

Bernina Express to St Moritz

You have a last chance to buy souvenirs from sunny Ticino before departing by the Bernina Express coach to Tirano (Italy). At Tirano you will join the Bernina Express train. Enjoy the narrated journey and the incredible climb over the Bernina Pass 2,253m (7,391ft). The area along the train line has recently been appointed a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. You will stay in St. Moritz for the next two nights.

St Moritz

Today, you have a free day in St. Moritz. Exploring the stunning Engadine countryside is a must. There are hundreds of walking and hiking trails for all abilities.

Day 6 Glacier Express

The Glacier Express

Today you take the world famous Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt which crosses no less than 291 bridges and travels through 91 tunnels. Panoramic windows offer you the optimum view of the dramatic and ever changing landscape. A nice break to the 7½h long journey is offered in form of refreshments. Why not pre book a freshly prepared dish of the day or even a 3-course meal served at your seat? After an exhilarating trip, you will arrive in Zermatt for the next two nights.

Day 7 Zermatt

Free day in Zermatt

Today you have a free day in Zermatt. Take advantage of your included Half Fare Card in order to get 50% discount on the Gornergrat excursion. The highest cogwheel train in Switzerland will take you to an altitude of 3,089m (10,134ft) above sea level. During the ride to the summit, you will experience excellent vantage points for some 29 four-thousand-metre peaks including the mighty Matterhorn and impressive glaciers of the Monte Rosa massif.
