Discover the delights of Paris and Avignon on this suggested itinerary from GRJ Independent, hit the streets of Paris and visit the country's famous landmarks, then revel in the historic city of Avignon where you can enjoy views spanning the Rhône and Mont Ventoux.
Your journey begins at London St Pancras as you board the Eurostar train to Paris. On arrival in Paris you'll be keen to hit the streets of this evocative and captivating city. The famous landmarks need little introduction but you cannot fail to be impressed by the magnificent views, rich history and impressive architecture of attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Sacré-Coeur.
In the morning, leave Paris behind and head for Avignon. For a gentle introduction to the city, head to Rue des Teinturiers or 'Street of the Dyers'. This picturesque street is home to the city's last remaining Gothic residence, the Maison du IV de Chiffre, the Chapel of the Pénitents-Gris and the bell tower of the Cordeliers Convent.
With its rich history, Avignon is home to many UNESCO heritage sites including the Pont St-Bénézet and the impressive Palais des Papes, the world's largest medieval Gothic palace. Alternatively visit the Rocher des Doms, a lush hilltop garden set on rocky bluff overlooking the city. From here you get a glorious panorama of the old town's terracotta roofs.
On your final day in Avignon, head to Les Halles, the city's vibrant market to savour the sights, smells and tastes of fresh Provençal produce. From there, art-lovers can happily while away a few hours in the wonderful Angladon Museum, home to Van Gogh's Railway Carriages and pieces by Picasso, Manet and Cézanne.
After breakfast you will depart Avignon for your return trip to Paris Gare de Lyon. Here, you will transfer and connect to Gare du Nord for your final rail journey to London St Pancras.
