THE POPPY LINETHE POPPY LINE, DAY 2This surviving section of the North Norfolk Railway was originally built in 1887. Traffic began to decline in the 1930s, however and much of the line was earmarked for closure. An unpopular decision, a preservation society was formed to save the 'people's railway' - ensuring the idyllic scenery of the Norfolk Broads was accessible to all.Restoring the North Norfolk Railway took a lot of perseverance, but in 1976 it was finally able to re-open to passengers as a heritage line. It proved to be very popular, and was soon given the nickname 'the Poppy Line', thanks to the many flowers that line the scenic route. Travelling from Sheringham to Holt, we enjoy beautiful views of the dramatic east coast, as well as thick pine woodland and Cromer Ridge, which dates back to the last ice age.146 ENGLAND, WALES AND IRELAND"
