Germany & Eastern Europe

Germany & Eastern Europe Escorted Rail Holidays

Step into the pages of your favourite childhood fairytale book when you explore Germany or Eastern Europe. There is no denying the nostalgic sense of magic evoked as we uncover dreamy Bavarian castles, ancient emerald forests, and pastel-tinged villages. Peppering these enchanting landscapes, forward-thinking cities reveal an abundance of history and culture, blended with Imperial architecture, poignant monuments and lively piazzas.

Between explorations, tuck into some of the most delicious comfort food around; tasty Polish pierogi and hearty Montenegrin stew. Or retire to a traditional beer hall and indulge in a 'stein' of some of the world's best beer.

From the contemporary shopping centres of Berlin to the primeval forests of Belarus, the countries of Eastern Europe are diverse in culture, environment and history. Great Rail Journeys tours through Eastern Europe include a selection of holidays to amaze even the most seasoned of travellers. By using the knowledge of local guides we bring out hidden details in famous attractions and unearth a range of sights known only to the natives.

“Wonderful experiences on this trip. My only reservations were some very tight connections on the railway journeys, and the heat which you can do nothing about! I think the information about the trip should say what the demands on the traveller are. Our tour manager for the rail parts of the trip, Steve, was absolutely outstanding in his kindness and consideration as well as his efficiency in managing the trip and dealing with any contretemps.

“We had a great holiday and the scenery was fantastic. The first 4 days were done with trains, 1st day stop Stuttgart with castles to see, next 3 at Fussen and mountain's to see all great. The rest of the holiday was on ship on the Danube, terrific service and views.

“The trip was very enjoyable especially after the glorious weather we had it made the areas look really beautiful. The first day was long with all the travelling that took place. Full marks for, the staff at the Double Tree in Hannover who stayed on and produced quiet a lovely meal quite late at night. The bonus was the next day we were quite close to our second day destinations we meant we could get up reasonably late as we were not departing the hotel until 12.30pm. Couple of issues with the German trains the train to Hannover was delayed due to problems at Dortmund however luckily for us the train was re routed via another route to overcome the problem, it did delay our arrival into Hannover a bit but the Double Tree was so welcoming to us even though we arrived gone 9pm. Second issue we were booked on train to Frankfurt 1st class but due to technical issues the first calls carriages were not in operation, fortunately most of the passengers on the train shuffled around to allow our group to find seats to sit on. Stephen the tour director was excellent he came well prepared for the trip, he was very knowledgeable and it was useful he could speak German as the Harz area was less fluent in English than the Rhine Gorge. Stephen's trade mark red coat was an easy way to spot him at meeting points, however I did feel sorry for him as the weather was so hot for the time of year and he must have felt too hot at times in it. It was a very enjoyable trip in two beautiful areas of Germany.
