Enjoy a fantastic cruise on the mighty Rhine
From Amsterdam in Holland, we explore charming medieval wine towns, admire the breathtaking scenery of the Rhine Gorge and then cross into France, exploring charming Strasbourg before ending in the Swiss city of Basel.
We meet at our exclusive Departure Office at St Pancras International, where we join the Eurostar to Brussels. We change trains in Brussels and continue into Holland on the high-speed train to Amsterdam, where our home for the next seven nights, the MS Amadeus Silver II, is moored (ship is departure dependant).
This morning there is an optional Amsterdam city tour available, where on which you will board a glass-topped boat for a charming cruise through the city's myriad of canals. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to take in the unique waters of Amsterdam as we sail past typical Amsterdam townhouses on a route which covers the most important parts of the city.
Alternatively, you may wish to take this morning to explore at your own pace. This city is a thriving up of different cultures, and its history and legacy can be explored in any of the countless museums which hide in the alleys and squares. You may also wish to visit the house of Anne Frank, the famous Jewish diarist whose diary retells her time as a Jew hiding during the Nazi rule of the Netherlands.
Today we arrive in the historic city of Cologne. This afternoon, we embark on a guided walking tour of the city, taking in the many sights, including the iconic Cathedral. This striking old building has remained standing since the 13th century, surviving an incredible fourteen bombing strikes during the aerial bombardment of Cologne in the Second World War.
Upon arrival in Cochem, you may choose to explore the town at leisure or join an optional guided walking tour through the narrow alleyways and cobbled streets of this charming location. Immediately noticeable as your ship pulls into Cochem is the ever-impressive Reichsburg Cochem, an imperial castle with a grand central tower which casts its shadow over the town and harbour below.
We arrive at the beautifully preserved city of Koblenz. Here, we embark on a guided tour of the city, including the wondrous Old Town district. Split over both banks of the Rhine near its joining with the Moselle, Koblenz provides a snapshot into a number of different sections of Germany's past, with Roman ruins brushing shoulders with imperial monuments.
We then continue sailing along to Rüdesheim, a winemaking town of amiable atmosphere and some prestige. Here, there is an optional excursion to discover the town on a guided tour.
As our cruise ship shores up in Mannheim, there is an optional excursion to the nearby town of Heidelberg. For a true taste of traditional rural Germany, Heidlberg has all the necessary ingredients, from its majestic castle Schloss Heidelberg to its quaint shops.
Later, we cruise on to Speyer, one of Germany's oldest cities, where we embark on a guided tour of the beautiful Old Town.
This morning we visit Strasbourg, the attractive capital of Alsace, where there is an optional guided tour or the chance to explore at your own pace. Poised between Germany and France, Strasbourg is the epitome of Alsatian charm with pastel coloured buildings leaning over the gentle waters of the Rhine. The quaint old half timbered designs and shuttered windows lend a timeless feel to the Strasbourg streets, which wind and turn, linking the bustling squares with the metropolitan European quarter with its modern design and clinical finish.
