Embark on a journey across the fantastic United States of America on board Amtrack's 'Empire Builder'. Venturing from historic Chicago, enjoy your American journey as you skirt across the top of this great nation to trendy Seattle on the western seaboard.
Fly into Chicago on your first day, where you stay for the next four nights. You are at leisure in Chicago for these first few days, and there is a plethora of things to do in this historic city.
One option is to head up the Willis tower. Once known as the Sears Tower, this 110 story building boasts of some truly fantastic views across Chicago. The Willis Tower was built in 1973, and became the world record holder for the tallest building in the world - beating out the World Trade Centre towers built just 2 years earlier. Set very centrally within the city, and on the shores of the enormous Lake Michigan, going up here is a must-do for city-scape lovers, and those who just want to gaze out at the beauty of Chicago.
Another landmark of Chicago is far more recent. Officially called 'Cloud Gate' but called 'The Bean' locally, this 2006 sculpture by British artist Sir Anish Kapoor is a surprisingly satisfying and iconic sight within modern Chicago. This is a bean shaped and incredibly shiny metal sculpture is a fantastic art instillation, and loved by those who witness it.
For those who are after a greener side to this modern landscape, the Chicago Botanic Garden is a marvellous place to visit. With 27 gardens, including a Green Roof Garden and a Native Plant Garden, this delightful tourist attraction is the ideal way to while away an afternoon after the busy hubbub of Chicago.
Day 5 is your final day in Chicago. Today, make your way to the station to board Amtrak's wonderful Empire Builder train.
Your cabin on board the train is a Superliner Roomette. Here, your meals are included, and the large picture window is a perfect way to see the passing scenery. There are also two large reclining seats which converts into a bed. There are also electrical outlets, reading lights, linens, and bottled water on board. The showers and restrooms are in the same train car, but not in the roomette itself.
On board, you traverse the northern states of the U.S.A., discovering the gorgeous changing scenery from busy city to verdant countryside. The major cities to look out for on board include Minneapolis, Spokane, and of course Seattle. Other, more natural, sights to view include the spectacular Columbia Basin which was created over 10 million years ago, as well as the glorious Cascade Mountains, where the tracks pass through the Cascade Tunnel, built in 1929.
You arrive into Seattle on Day 7, where you make your way to your hotel. After, you are at leisure.
You have plenty of time to explore beautiful Seattle. A relatively recent city, having been incorporated in 1869, this city is named for Suquamish Chief, Chief Seattle. The 'Emerald City' has now made a name for itself for being filled with festivals, museums, delicious restaurants, and lively bars.
One of the most iconic things to do whilst in Seattle is to go up the futuristic Space Needle. Like the Willis Tower, in Chicago, this quintessential part of the Seattle skyline offers some incredible views over the entire city, and also the surrounding bodies of water. Entire days can be dedicated to exploring the parts of the city around the Space Needle, as nearby there is also the Museum of Pop Culture, the Pacific Science Centre, and also Chihuly Garden and Glass, which showcases the beautiful works of artist Dale Chihuly.
