Rendezvous at the train station today to board El Transcantábrico, beginning your journey today as you travel onwards to Viveiro. Enjoy a complementary drink to get your trip off to a great start, then enjoy a tour of Viveiro, a quaint town on the Cantabric Sea.
Continue your travels as the train takes you towards historic Ribadeo. Here you'll disembark for a coach excursion to Las Catedrales Beach, known in English as the 'beach of Cathedrals', for reasons you will soon discover for yourself. Afterwards there'll be an escorted sightseeing tour around Ribadeo followed by some free time to explore. After lunch on board the train, there's one last excursion to the fishing town of Luarca. Tonight El Transcantábrico overnights in Candás.
Today begins in the ancient city Aviles where you discover the secrets of its quaint old town. Next you'll visit Gijon that boasts a history dating back to the Roman era and wears its culture on its sleeve. It's back to the train for lunch before you're driven to the regional capital of Oviedo, home to art galleries, museums and a wonderful Gothic cathedral. Take a city tour before returning to El Transcantábrico which makes its way to Arriondas for the night.
Drive to the beautiful Picos de Europa National Park taking in natural wonders such as Lake Enol and the Shrine of Covadonga. This afternoon enjoy views of the Stella river as the train travels to coastal Llanes for the night. This evening enjoy time to explore at your leisure.
As you sit down to breakfast, enjoy the passing scenery while making the journey to Unquera. On arrival continue by coach through La Hermida gorge to Potes, a honey-coloured village in the Liebana Valley and known for local produce such as grapes, cherries and walnuts as well as a potent local spirit called Orujo. After time here, visit the thermal spa of La Hermida then return to the train for lunch. In the afternoon arrive into Cabezón de la Sal where you may choose to visit the mansion of El Capricho in nearby Comillas. Dating back to the 19th century, it was designed by Antonio Gaudí.
Disembarking, make your way to Santillana del Mar to experience its beautifully preserved medieval quarter. You'll then continue to Altamira Neocave for a guided tour that will teach you all about this rare example of Upper Palaeolithic cave art. The train meanders along the track to Santander in the afternoon, the capital city of the Cantabria region. Here there is a guided tour you can join which will introduce to many famous and historical landmarks. This evening there is an optional excursion to El Gran Casino (entrance included).
Today you'll arrive in the dynamic city of Bilbao, where there is a guided tour that includes entrance to the renowned Guggenheim Museum. Back on board, dinner is served as the train continues to Villasana de Mena or Mercadillo.
Return to Bilbao this morning, where you'll disembark for a final time following breakfast. The rest of your day is at leisure here and tonight you'll enjoy accommodation in a local hotel.
Transfer to Bilbao airport today for your return flight to London Stansted.
