Enjoy an authentic German Christmas
Enjoy an authentic German Christmas with this festive tour which delves deep into the heart of rural Germany to uncover magnificent cities, spectacular rail journeys and sublime countryside. Experience steam railroads and artisanship during your time in the Ore Mountains of Saxony.
Meet your Tour Manager and the rest of the group at our dedicated departure office at London St Pancras, where you board the Eurostar service traveling to Brussels. On arrival here, change trains for Cologne where you have some time to visit the charming Christmas markets. On Day 2, we head to the station to catch our train to Annaberg-Buschholz in the beautiful Ore Mountains in Saxony.
Today is Christmas Eve and we venture forth on a steam train journey today, traveling on the magnificent Fichtelbergbahn through some glorious landscapes, rising higher up into the mountains. This enchanting old locomotive dates all the way back to 1897 and takes us to the idyllic resort of Oberwiesenthal.
On Day 4, it is Christmas Day and we enjoy a visit to the famous Factory of Dreams, a fascinating gallery displaying the incredible craftworks of the Ore Mountains, including toys, miniatures and sculptures made with materials from the region. After this, we sit down to a traditional Christmas dinner, with all manner of German delicacies on offer. Later, we embark on a guided tour of Annaberg- Buchholz, seeing the town lit up in festive splendour including its beautiful townhouses and the town hall.
Today, we make the short walk to St Anne's Church in the heart of town where we are treated to a brief, but enchanting organ recital before a guided tour around the Late-Gothic church itself, which dates back to the 15th century. We continue across town to another church, the 16th century St Marien Mountain Church which is famously dedicated to the miners who worked in the Ore Mountains. Within, we see the remarkable Miner's Nativity, whose charming and ornate nativity scenes display the astonishing craftsmanship of the residents of Annaberg-Buschholz.
We pay a visit to the fascinating Ore Mountain's Museum on Day 6, which details the absorbing history of the mining industry which characterised life in this region. We then descend into one of the old mines, to discover first hand what it was like to mine for the silver ore for which this region is known.
We leave Annaberg-Buschholz today, traveling to Cologne by rail. Here we stay a night before continuing to Brussels, and finally on to London.
