Cologne Night
Days 1-2

To Cologne and Vienna

We meet at our dedicated Departure Office in St Pancras and leave by Eurostar to Brussels, travelling in Standard Premier Class. We continue by train in First Class to Cologne, where we overnight. On Day 2 we travel by Standard Class rail to Vienna.

Day 3

Vienna sightseeing

Today we take a morning sightseeing tour of the city, which includes the beautiful Vienna State Opera*. After some free time for lunch, we have a short tour of the famous Cafe Demel Bakery, after which we are served delicious coffee and cakes. Demel is a well-known Viennese chocolatier, once known as the Imperial Hapsburg's confectioner of choice.

*During rehearsals we will visit St Stephen's Cathedral instead, with its impressive 450 feet (137m) high spire

Day 4

Waltz lessons in Vienna

Today you can enjoy a relaxed morning - perhaps take a stroll through the beautiful parkland around the hotel. Later we visit a classic Viennese dancing school, where we are introduced to the signature dance, the Viennese Waltz. We enjoy an entertaining lesson, which focuses not only on the dancing, but also on typical traditions and etiquette of a Viennese Ball.

Day 5

Schönbrunn Palace and the Kursalon

This morning we enjoy an insightful guided tour of Schönbrunn Palace. One of the most important cultural monuments in Europe, this lavish palace is a famed UNESCO World Heritage site. After time to admire the palace, we return to the hotel. Tonight, dressed in our smartest evening wear, we enjoy the Ball at the Kursalon - a beloved Viennese tradition. You are free to return to the hotel individually, after dancing as much or as little as you wish.

Day 6

At leisure and Journey Home

You are free to sleep in late this morning though do not miss your Katerfrühstück, or 'hangover breakfast' - a true post-ball tradition. Your day is free to spend as you wish. On Day 7 we return in Standard Class to Cologne, where we overnight. On Day 8 we travel by First Class rail to Brussels, then join the Eurostar to London.

The Johann Strauss Ball

2017 sees the 150th anniversary of this spectacular event, a stalwart of Viennese society functions. Sit back and watch the traditional opening ceremony, where professional dancers take to the ballroom to kick off a night of celebration, before enjoying the chance to dance the night away in Vienna's historic Kursalon. To celebrate this momentous occasion, as well as the usual dinner and dancing that takes place, there will also be a performance from the famous Vienna Boys' Choir.
