Vienna

Vienna is one of the great European capitals - a city full of tradition and rich in architectural, artistic and musical heritage. Situated on the banks of the Danube, with a population of about 1.7 million, Vienna is by far Austria's largest city, as well as cultural, economic and political centre. Vienna was originally a Celtic settlement, founded around 500BC later to become a Roman frontier in 15BC previously known as "Vindobona".

In 1440 the Habsburg dynasty took a seat for several centuries, and the city became their residence. Vienna is full of reminders of its imperial heyday, from the austere Hofburg Palace to the magnificent baroque Belvedere Palace and the grandiose public buildings of the Ringstrasse. Although it can be traced back to the Roman era, Vienna did not gain any real significance until it passed into the control of the Babenburg dynasty.

Grand Imperial Cities
25/Sep
Mr Russell Hodgson
5 stars
“The tour was great fun, seeing and experiencing new cities with a great group of people. The tour group was only 22 people, including the tour manager, and this made the tour more enjoyable. The cities we visited were impressive and we were enjoyed having plenty of free time to explore on out own. There were a few hitches with the running of some trains but our tour manager did a great job of sorting things out and this all added to the adventure!

“We really enjoyed our holiday in Austria, fantastic scenery, the highlight our holiday was the day we did the Sound of Music and the Austrian Lake District, the local guide, Trudy was so good, we had music from the film played in the coach and many of us sung along.

“Mostly very good. Marred by two things. Firstly overcrowded local trains in Germany apparently because of a special post-Covid cheap travel deal on German trains. Secondly, we didn't have our own tour manager throughout, as has been the case when we've used GRJ previously - we were left in the hands of two tour managers on the ship dealing with very large numbers of clients. We were well managed for the train journeys and Oberammergau trip.

“Excellent food and comfortable accommodation. GRJ Tour guide inexperienced and hopeless. A flexible approach would have enabled length of a particular day tour to be curtailed when constant heavy rain left groups wandering around with little shelter.

“Not impressed yet again . I have already rated the holiday and am awaiting a reply to another e mail. Holiday was great , wonderful, but wonder about some aspects of GRJ organisation .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Schönbrunn Palace is one of the ultimate cultural monuments in Austria and is definitely a must see including the palace and the park with its numerous architectural features, fountains and statues. The castle was built to rival French Versailles in Baroque beauty and importance, but House Habsburg lacked funds to out-do the opposing nation of France. In earlier times it served as summer residence to various Habsburg rulers. In 1918, the palace became property of the new republic due to this historical importance, its beautiful location and its gardens.
