The resort town of Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most distinctive mountains in the world. In winter Zermatt is dominated by skiers and is part of a ski region with over 186 miles (300 kilometres) of pistes. The town has a unique charm, protected by strict planning guidelines and a ban on cars; although this ban only relates to combustion-engine cars - battery powered vehicles are permitted and you are sure to see a variety of quirky electric cars and taxis in Zermatt.
With a permanent population of fewer than 6,000, Zermatt is predominately a tourist destination, attracting visitors all year round for skiing, hiking, climbing and sightseeing.
The fascinating Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt is focused on the history of the famous mountain, and the rise of tourism in the town and surrounding region since attempts were first made to reach the summit.
