Escorted Rail Tours to Jungfraujoch

The highest railroad station in Europe

The route from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railroad station, actually comprises three different railroads. The first leg from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen is on the Bernese Oberland Railroad. This narrow-gauge line was opened to the public in 1890, and it is 12 miles in length. Over the course of the route, the line climbs 1,532 feet (467 metres) above sea level.

The line was electrified in 1914, and some of these locomotives survive for occasional use on special trains today. However, nowadays services are mostly run by specially-designed trains with low floors and large windows, built to maximise both comfort and the views of the beautiful Alpine scenery in the area. At Lauterbrunnen, the Wengernalp Railroad runs to Kleine Scheidegg. Like the Bernese Oberland Railroad, this is also a narrow-gauge line, and was opened for traffic in 1893.

“The hotels were of variable standard. We felt the hotel in Traunkirchen was not of 4 star standard with regard to facilities, room, and the hotel was not particularly well situated. The dinners served in St Moritz were of poor quality and appeared to have been prepared on an extremely tight budget. However the hotel in Innsbruck was excellent and we would have preferred more time there than in Traunkirchen. The total porterage worked excellently which is why we give the vacation 4 and not 3.

“Sweitzerland was so pretty. Their trains were clean and bright and their staff at local level were very pleasant. Our hotel was full of character but was too far up the hill in Wengen.
