Drachenfels Railway

Travel on the Drachenfels Cog Railway, that starts at the bottom of Königswinger and takes us up 722 feet to the top of Drachenfels Mountain, and past Schloss Drachenburg - a stunningly beautiful villa that is said to have inspired the castle in Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. On arrival at the top of the mountain, you will see the ruins of Burg Drachenfels, a castle that was built in the 12th century, and destroyed 500 years later. The line started running in 1883, using steam powered trains, changing to electric traction in 1953, and continues to run today.

“Unmissable experience and adventure. The mighty Matterhorn and Zermatt were certainly highlights of the tour for us. Cologne Cathedral and Amsterdam were a close second. The Amadeus Cara Rhine river cruise was a 5star floating hotel with faultless quality service from the catering and room attendant staff. We had a wonderful time. We are not regular cruisers but thoroughly enjoyed our first train and river cruise experience. A great choice. Our luxury cabin was comfortable. Our only reason for not giving 5 stars was the choice of the dining area and location for the hotel in Davos. The hotel was good and so was the food. We would fully recommend this tour.

“Railway journey out not great courier unaware of my problem with escalators although I had informed Great Rail Ahead. Brussels Midi became a nightmare. Ship was great love the standard of the Amedaus Staff meals etc. There was conflict between information from ship and tour manager. the walking tours were too tiring for us both duration and amount of standing. No time for proper breaks during these tours. Guides consistently underestimated the time that they would take. Tour to Luxembourg on a Sunday was very problematic!!! Places were very interesting would have loved much more time in Trier with a good map by ourselves.
