Day 5 - Charming Rüdesheim, the magical Rhine Gorge, and picturesque Koblenz
We sail into the captivating town of Rüdesheim, famous for its
delicious white wine, especially the dry Riesling variety. There's
time to wander its cobbled streets and see the charming
half-timbered houses, quaint shops, and enticing wine bars in the
Drosselgasse alley. Next, we enjoy a highlight of our cruising
experience - sailing through the romantic Rhine Gorge.
This section of the Rhine is renowned for its spectacular views.
The riverbanks plunge deeper here, and we wind around bends
surrounded by endless miles of lush green vineyards, ancient
castles, and picturesque riverside towns. It's also one of the
narrowest points of the river with one of the strongest
currents.
As we sail, we hear the fascinating story of the legendary
Lorelei Rock which soars almost 500 feet out of the water. This
monument has been the inspiration for countless myths and legends,
and we hear of them as we sail by.
After this relaxing cruise, we arrive in Koblenz, where the
Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. From the Deutsches Eck, there are
amazing views of surrounding beauty with the Rhine on one side and
the Moselle on the other. On a guided tour we wander the charming
streets where the air is filled with scents of freshly brewed
coffee and baked goods as we pass by and admire lovely shop window
displays. We see the St Castor Basilica and the Liebfrauenkirche,
also known as the Church of Our Beloved Lady. As we enjoy dinner
onboard, we set sail for Bernkastel-Kues.
