Chur

Chur is the oldest town in Switzerland and is ideally placed for exploring the south-east of the country thanks to its excellent transport links. Whilst it is the end of the line for the SBB main line trains, it is also a key centre for the metre-gauge Rhatische Bahn that runs through to St Moritz, Davos, Arosa and into Italy, as well as the Glacier Express line to Disentis. The Tourist Office is located at the station near the bottom of the escalator at the main entrance.

The 12th century cathedral is well worth a visit, combining Gothic and Romanesque styles. The old town is grouped around Martinsplatz with the arcaded Rathaus (Town Hall) dating from 1464 and St Martins Reformed parish church dating from 1491 to 1526. There are many pedestrianised streets to explore through the old town with a good selection of shops, or why not enrich your mind at one of Chur's many museums?

Classic Glacier Express

“Booked this trip as a treat immediately after retiring. Overall the trip exceeded expectations and despite a couple of days of poor weather got to enjoy the scenery amd the company on the whole trip. Slight word of warning though. This issue didn’t affect me or my travel companion but the trip did involve quite a bit of walking that wasn’t explained in the trip description. This was an issue for a few of the group who were not the most able. It was a particular problem when moving from train to accommodation and many on the group were trying to cope with luggage while only having a couple of minutes to get on or off trains, and when walking between station and hotel. We used the Sherpr service offered to move our main luggage about so we only had backpacks but apparently some in the group were let down. Nevertheless even without luggage there was more walking than anticipated. As you can imagine Switzerland is very hilly so if you have difficulty walking this isn’t for you. Personally, although I am terribly unfit, this wasn’t an issue for me and the extra exercise did me good.

“The scenery was stunning with wonderful mountains, glaciers, valleys and lakes whether on the Glacier or Bernini Express or a local railway. Very well organised trip with an exceptional guide. Switzerland impressed, everywhere was so clean and well looked after.

“As ever with Great Rail, this was a super trip with a very good tour manager - Linda. The hotels were very nice with some excellent meals. Glacier Express and Bernina Express were wonderful ways to see Switzerland. We really enjoyed the experience but a note to anyone going on a rail trip across Europe - you will have to change trains at various cities and be able to manage yourself and your bags across busy stations. We enjoy the excitement of rail travel but some folks seem surprised that a good level of mobility is required.
