Warsaw and on to Moscow

Today we continue eastwards, travelling across the Polish border to the impressive city of Warsaw, where we spend the night.

On Day 4 you have a sightseeing tour of Poland's capital. This beautiful city has hundreds of years of history to uncover - the oldest building in Warsaw is St John's Cathedral, which started construction at the end of the 14th century. A favorite of many who visit is the charming Old Town. Filled with quaint cobbled streets and multicolored buildings, this area is a delight to explore. Although many of the originally medieval buildings were destroyed in World War II, they have been painstakingly restored and reconstructed. Here also, surrounding the main square, Rynek Starego Miasta, you can find numerous upscale restaurants offering delectable Polish fare. This can be anything from 'pierogi', the national dish of Poland which are delicious dumplings filled with cabbage or potato, or sour rye soup, served in a bowl of sourdough bread.

Later we board the overnight sleeper train for a journey to Moscow.

Includes:
  • Day 3: Breakfast, Dinner; Day 4: Breakfast
Days 5-6 Red Square, Moscow

On Day 6 we spend the day in Moscow and take a tour of its famous sights, including the Kremlin, Red Square and St. Basil's Cathedral. Following lunch in a Moscow restaurant, this evening we join the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, for our fabulous 12-night adventure to Vladivostok.

On Day 9 we alight in Novosibirsk, the capital of Siberia, for a guided tour, taking in the world's largest Opera House, and Lenin's imposing statue. The performing arts are an important part of both the city and Siberia, and the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is the largest building of its kind in Russia. Built in 1944, the magnificent structure has been a key symbol of the city ever since. Due to its importance, it's even been nicknamed the 'Siberian Colosseum' and is a much-loved attraction of both Novosibirsk and Siberia.

To Irkutsk

We spend Day 10 on the train enjoying the passing scenery as we travel through the Sayan Mountains. Enjoy drinking in the views at your leisure, or take advantage of the many comforts offered on board our luxurious train.

On Day 11 we arrive in Irkutsk, founded by Cossacks. One of the largest and best-known cities in Siberia, it takes its name from the nearby Irkut River, which meets the mighty, 1,640-foot-wide Angara River, close to the city. Surrounded by dense forest lands, Irkutsk was founded in 1661 AD as a fort to colonize lands stretching right through Siberia to Alaska. Though little is known about the place from that time, it gained notoriety in the early 19th century, when many Russian nobles, artists and officers were sent into exile in the city for taking part in the Decembrist revolt against Tsar Nicholas I. The city is affectionately known as 'the Paris of Siberia', and much of the city's cultural heritage came from these political outcasts. Many of their wooden houses have survived, and during a sightseeing tour we take in the fascinating wood-carved architecture, and visit the city's most signifi cant sights and museums, including the Decembrist House Museum.

We wind our way through tunnels and along cliff-hugging tracks on our way to the small village of Listvyanka, nestled at the foot of the surrounding hills. At the frozen Lake Baikal, we enjoy a thrilling hovercraft ride, followed by the opportunity to watch ice fishing and sample the freshly caught fish, which will be smoked in a mobile smoke house and served warm, with ice-cold vodka.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Visit the Ice Festival at Lake Baikal
