Escorted Rail Tours to Zermatt

A bustling ski resort at the foot of the Matterhorn

The resort town of Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most distinctive mountains in the world. In winter Zermatt is dominated by skiers and is part of a ski region with over 186 miles (300 kilometres) of pistes. The town has a unique charm, protected by strict planning guidelines and a ban on cars; although this ban only relates to combustion-engine cars - battery powered vehicles are permitted and you are sure to see a variety of quirky electric cars and taxis in Zermatt.

With a permanent population of fewer than 6,000, Zermatt is predominately a tourist destination, attracting visitors all year round for skiing, hiking, climbing and sightseeing.

Glacier Express in Winter
Ms C Hill
“A wonderful full itinerary, well organized and planned. The hotels were a great contrast...one in a town and one in a small village of typically Swiss wooden houses surrounded by mountains, and only accessible by train. The country was expensive, but the provided meals were good and local. Our group was friendly and a good mix of pleasant people, who all got on well. The weather couldn’t have been better....five days of sunshine for all the trips on the glacier and Bernina Express, so amazing views, then snow on the last day for a wonderful woodland walk from the chairlift above our last hotel. One of the best tours we have had with Great Rail.
