Harrogate

Harrogate is a popular tourist destination, located in North Yorkshire, adjacent to Knaresborough in the Nidd Valley. It rose to prominence in the 19th century primarily as a spa town. With excellent transport links, Harrogate is an ideal base from which to explore Yorkshire. The town originated in the 17th century, with High Harrogate and Low Harrogate as two separate settlements. Harrogate became known as 'The English Spa' in the Georgian era, after its first mineral spring was discovered in 1751 by William Slingsby, which led to an influx of wealthy visitors in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Harrogate has beautiful parks and an abundance of historic buildings including the town's famous spa. Relax and unwind with a visit to the Turkish Baths and Spa or enjoy a stroll around one of the many parks. The Tourist Information Centre is located in the magnificent Royal Baths at the historic heart of the town.

Harlow Carr

Harlow Carr lies on the western edge of Harrogate, it is the most recent addition in 2001 to the Royal Horticultural Society's Gardens. The public gardens feature a variety of unique landscaped areas and sculptures, dominated by water, stone and woodland making up much of Yorkshire's surrounding countryside. Harlow Carr has something for everyone, from winter walks, vegetables, wild flowers and alpines to woodland and of course you shouldn't leave Harrogate without experiencing tea and scones at the famous Betty's Tea Rooms.

Knaresborough

If you wish to go further afield perhaps visit Knaresborough Castle, discover King's tower, get a glimpse of the dungeon and walk through the underground sally port. The Courthouse Museum displays Knaresborough's fascinating history and those who inspired and influenced it, such as Eugene Aram, the infamous 18th century murderer. Knaresborough town is only a short walk from the castle where you can explore the riverside, cobbled streets and much more.
