VIA Rail

VIA Rail is Canada's national rail service, providing services all across the country. Established in 1977, the rail network was founded as a solution to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's call for an essential rail service between cities. The first ever national passenger service in Canada; it has served passengers for almost 50 years.

Taking over track from the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways to create its first cross-country passenger route from Vancouver to Montreal for its flagship route, VIA Rail named the train along that line 'The Canadian' as a nod to its predecessors. Since then, VIA Rail has expanded to reach over 400 cities and towns throughout Canada, including major destinations - such as Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Quebec City. There is a total of over 7,765 miles of track within VIA Rail's national network.

On all services, passengers can capture the ever-changing scenery of Canada's vast landscapes from large picture windows. Most trains are equipped with power outlets, and many feature Wi-Fi Internet access. You can expect onboard comfort in all seasons, thanks to efficient air conditioning and heating on all of VIA Rail's services.
