Itinerary
Your holiday begins at London St Pancras, where we meet the Tour Manager and group before boarding the Eurostar service to Paris, enjoying a light meal at our seats. From the French capital, we continue by rail to the attractive medieval town of Chambéry, with its backdrop of the French Alps. On arrival, we take a short walk from the station to our hotel, where we check in for the night before dinner together.
Chambéry has a historic Old Town with a characterful square, tall, colourful houses, and is officially listed as a Town of Art and History ('Ville d'Art et d'Histoire').

With a fantastic group of fellow travellers we had a wonderful holiday based in Hotel Continental in Sirmione. As most vehicles are not permitted through the castle gates, there is a pleasant 10 minute walk from the hotel through the town to catch boats and buses. The hotel is right on the lake side with great pools and the food is excellent. Four course dinners plus a salad bar are eaten all together with the group, with choices having to be made at breakfast. Ironing is prohibited in the Sirmione hotel rooms and only the upgraded rooms offer tea and coffee facilities, along with a larger room, dressing gowns and a bigger balcony with a side lake view. The staff were friendly and assisted us efficiently. The hotel in Chambery, right opposite the train station, is not to the stardard of the other two hotels we stayed in but sufficient for one night. Dinner was in a local restaurant. The Hotel de la Prix in Lausanne was luxurious and our room had an amazing view of Lake Garda. The scheduled days in Verona, Venice and Malcestine were long and tiring in the 33/34 degree heat and involved a lot of walking - 16000+ steps each day. However, they were well organised with excellent tour guides. The visit to the Valpolicella winery was well worth it. Travel days at the beginning and end of the holiday were long and connecting trains sometimes tight for transfer time! Some of the group took advantage of the door to door luggage service which they felt was worth the cost. This was our first Great Rail Journeys holiday and it was worry free having everything organised for us but still having free days to stay in the hotel, take boat trips around Lake Garda or attend an opera in Verona. I definitely recommend this escorted trip.

Fantastic hotel, with a wonderful location. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great bunch of people on the trip too. Trains in the main were really comfortable. One connection was a bit tight & one train had faulty air con - but small issues in what was a fantastic holiday.
