Day 2 - Amsterdam and the Medemblik Steam Train

This morning we have a choice of two excursions, the first is a city tour of Amsterdam. One of the most popular of all the European cities, Amsterdam is as modern as it is historic, as young as it is old. From its idyllic canals and vast parks to its great museums and unique architecture, the city has wide appeal. The second option is an excursion to Hoorn where we board the Medemblik Steam Train and enjoy a nostalgic trip through enchanting Dutch scenery. After lunch onboard we set sail for an overnight sailing to Cologne.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 - Cologne

We arrive into Cologne after lunch where we moor for the night. This afternoon we take a walking tour of the city. We visit the imposing Gothic cathedral, the largest in Northern Europe. We also wander through bustling squares and labyrinthine streets of Romanesque townhouses. This evening we enjoy dinner with drinks once again on our cruise ship.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 - The Upper Rhine and the Drachenfelsbahn

We depart Cologne this morning and discover the marvellous Upper Rhine, a stretch of river characterised by lush green meadows and pretty villages. Our Cruise Director provides us with the history of this area, and highlights points of interest. In the afternoon, we dock in Koenigswinter, where we embark on a journey on the Drachensfelbahn railway. This fabulous cog railway rises high into the forests, passing the fairytale Drachensfel castle and experiencing wonderful views across the Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. In the evening we enjoy another delicious dinner onboard our ship as we continue our cruise to Koblenz where we moor for the night.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 - Koblenz, Rüdesheim and the Rhine Gorge

This morning we have some free time to explore Koblenz, once a Roman stronghold. We return to our cruise ship for a Bavarian themed lunch, with a suckling pig, as we set sail for the enchanting German town of Rüdesheim am Rhein, known for its white wine, especially the dry Riesling variety.

Over lunch and this afternoon we experience one of the highlights of the tour, as we travel through the glorious Rhine Gorge, one of the most beautiful sections of the river and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The river banks deepen here, and we are surrounded by dense forests and endless miles of green vineyards. During this passage we see the extraordinary Lorelei Rock, a site of myth and legend.

On arrival in Rüdesheim am Rhein, there's free time to wander its cobbled streets and see its charming half-timbered houses, quaint shops and enticing wine bars. We are served dinner with drinks onboard our ship. We sail overnight to Speyer.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 - Speyer and Heidelberg

This morning we arrive into Speyer where we are docked for the day. After breakfast you have a free morning to explore. Following lunch onboard we take a coach excursion to the delightful university city of Heidelberg for a guided tour. Our excursion includes entrance to the magnificent Heidelberg castle, which stands proudly above the city, with fabulous views across the surrounding forest and down to the river. We return to our ship for dinner and an overnight sailing to Strasbourg.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 - Strasbourg or The Black Forest

Strasbourg's position on the German-French border has seen it change hands between the two nations throughout history. As a result, Strasbourg represents the best of both cultures, with colourful half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. You have two choices here. Your first option is a city tour of Strasbourg, discovering its charm and history. Your second choice is an excursion into the wonderful Black Forest, passing through stunning fairytale panoramas. We return to our ship for dinner and drinks, with an optional Gala dinner with the captain and crew.

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8 - Interlaken

After breakfast we transfer to the station and continue our journey by rail to the beautiful resort of Interlaken, set between two idyllic Alpine lakes, in Switzerland. This morning we travel by train to Kleine Scheidegg via Lauterbrunnen, for a stupendous journey to the summit of the Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway. Here you have free time to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountain from the Sphinx observatory, maybe visit the extraordinary Ice Palace to see the fabulous ice sculptures, or enjoy lunch with a view from one of the restaurants.
