A warm welcome aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express
Before stepping on board, James experienced a taste of what was to come, with an impressive welcome to the group.
"This train partners with the luxury 5-Star hotels for pre- and post-night stays and, for our group, held a welcome reception at the Four Seasons Sultanahmet in Istanbul, which was a lovely way to start the tour," said James.
Arriving at the station, James was greeted in style, as lively music serenaded his arrival at the platform.
"You are welcomed by a saxophonist playing jazz music as you approach the platform on the red carpet. The train was already there waiting, with all the staff lined up outside to personally introduce themselves to each guest. There was also a little brass band playing music as you arrived at Budapest station at the end.
"I was welcomed with hand-written invitations and met the train tour team and rest of passengers."
James was taken aback by the quality of where he would be staying for the journey. "I was amazed and thrilled by the size of the standard Deluxe Cabins! There was so much floor space with comfortable seating for relaxing, two huge windows to enjoy the views, and plenty of storage space."
Each deluxe sleeper carriage has just five spacious ensuite cabins offering every convenience and comfort so passengers can sit back and enjoy the scenery as it rolls by.
"It was beautifully decorated with warm colours in a classical style, retaining the authentic vibe of luxury travel."
The cabins have everything you could imagine for a perfect getaway, with onboard service to help you with the room facilities and an on-call button in the cabin for anything you require. The Golden Eagle invites you to relax in style and comfort.
"The cabin has an adjustable air-conditioning/heating unit plus a window for fresh air if required. The ensuite bathroom features a shower, toilet and washbasin, and you are provided with towels, bathrobe, slippers and toiletries. There's a full-length wardrobe to hang up clothes, plus there is overhead luggage space and shelves and a little safe for valuables."
Exceptional onboard dining
For breakfast, you can either order it to be delivered to your cabin at a time of your choosing, or you can head to the restaurant carriage to enjoy a continental buffet and selection of freshly cooked hot breakfasts too.
There are two restaurant carriages which feature armchairs and sofas, with the choice of tables of four or private tables for two.
The lunches and dinners are primarily served onboard the train, comprising of three-courses with different options for both the starters and main course, and then a special dessert designed by the expert pastry chef. There's also a great selection of wines to accompany.
"The food was very high quality with something for everyone, plus there were plenty of snacks and treats provided outside mealtimes."
Gothic experience in Romania's most historic castle
The mysterious Bran Castle has drawn in travellers from around the globe as its eerie appearance is home to Bram Stoker's fictional Dracula, a connection now reflected in parts of its museum.
"Bran Castle was my favourite location on this trip - seeing this historic place in real life was great," added James.
An exclusive after-hours dinner was arranged here, as the group had the opportunity to dine at the castle for their final dinner, the unforgettable location to end this spectacular journey.
"It was a unique venue to host our farewell dinner."
Watch Europe unfold beyond your window
The Golden Eagle Danube Express' route allows you to see a whole range of beautiful views, seeing wide agricultural plains of Bulgaria, the silhouette of Vitosha Mountains and viewing the slow and grand Danube River - meaning passengers would get a glimpse at all the hidden gems of that area of the world.
"It was a wonderful way to travel across multiple countries."
Whether enjoying coffee in the lounge car or chatting with fellow passengers over dinner, James noticed an unmistakable warmth onboard. By the time the train pulled into Budapest and the city's skyline appeared, after days of impeccable service and fine dining, James was saddened to leave such a remarkable tour.
"It was a true luxury adventure, and I did not want to leave the train when it arrived at Budapest."
