Austria

Travelling through Austria it is impossible to miss the elegance of the landscape. Over half of the country is mountainous terrain and the sections in between are awash with rivers, lakes and grand mansions. Some of the best ways to see Austria are holiday tours by train that cover the country's natural sights as well as the cultural centres of SalzburgInnsbruck and Vienna. Famed for the opera house, Vienna sparkles through the winter in the lights of the famous Christkindlmarkt, and in the summer the parks blossom with live performances of the music of Strauss. For the culturally minded, a rural Austrian holiday with tours of the cities is an experience to savour.

The Classic Blue Danube

“Wonderful cruise from start to finish. Extremely comfortable ship (Amadeus Riva). Delightful crew who provided first class service throughout - nothing was too much trouble. Menu choice and all meals incredibly high standard for a relatively small ship. All excursions interesting and well organised by cruise directors. Would highly recommend to others.

“We had a great holiday and the scenery was fantastic. The first 4 days were done with trains, 1st day stop Stuttgart with castles to see, next 3 at Fussen and mountain's to see all great. The rest of the holiday was on ship on the Danube, terrific service and views.

“Difficult to grade this holiday as the thing that overshadowed it, German Railways, was nothing to do with Great Rail Journeys but it did impact on the holiday a lot. Some days were full of cancelled trains, replaced by trains half their size, missed connection, trains being very late and being in the back half of the train when they announced that only the front half is going to Cologne! The holiday would be better with 3 nights in all 4 cities. I realise this would add to the cost. There was a lot packed in and it would be good that every 3rd day you didn't have to get up early and could have a leisurely breakfast. This is especially true of Berlin. I don't think it a good idea to have the 2 hour walking tour after you have been travelling all day. It would be better the following morning and then an extra day. All the hotels were good, although the meal at the Frankfurt one was very poor but they did do the best breakfast. I thought all the local guides were good but special praise must go to our group leader Oliver who had to work out all the sudden changes in travelling. I think without him we would all still be in Germany!

“As we like rail travel we chose this holiday linking with a river cruise which we enjoy. This was one of your longer journeys, heading towards the cruise from Budapest. There were several holdups on the outward 2 day train journey and there was anxiety that connections would not not be made. Simon, our train courier, was excellent, keeping us up-to-date. Unfortunately we arrived too late for dinner at the NH hotel in Nuremburg and were given sandwiches instead, not a good start as we had set off early that morning. After another held-up journey to Budapest the next day we arrived at the ship late, rather exhausted. The cruise was delightful, accommodation brilliant, staff helpful, food good. We enjoyed visiting such interesting countries though we opted out of the Austrian trips to Salzburg or Austrian lakes and enjoyed a very relaxing cruise from Linz to Passau instead. The recital by the string quartet from the Vienna Philharmonic was a highlight and the musical duo were excellent too. It was unfortunate that on occasions we were moored next to another cruise ship, thereby blocking the view from our cabin. Consequently we did not stay in our cabin on Mozart deck as the moored ship next to ours made it dark. The train journey home was delayed to Brussels so we had to rush to check-in and then we were told Eurostar to St Pancras was delayed by 50 minutes. We therefore missed our rail connections and finally managed to get home by 12.30am on Saturday 9th September. We will recall the cruise and the beautiful ship with pleasure and were fortunate with the weather, but we would not consider long train journeys with various connections again, which were arduous. (We used the Baggage Man which was an excellent service.)
