The town of Upington is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, situated on the banks of the Orange River. It was established as a town in 1884, having originated as a Christian Mission Station in 1875. It takes its name from Sir Thomas Upington, who was the Attorney-General of the Cape at the time. Upington is now known primarily as a wine town, enjoying its location in the Orange River Wine Cellar. The pretty area on the river banks around Upington accounts for almost half of South Africa's wine exports.
