We meet at our hotel in the Scottish capital, after which you're free to begin exploring. Make your way to the city's Old Town to see the most historic sights including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. There are plenty of other attractions well worth visiting too, such as Holyrood Palace, home to the royal residence of the Palace of Holyrood house and the seat of Scotland's new Parliament, Arthur's Seat viewpoint, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Includes
  • Dinner
Day 2 – To Inverness

We board our train for the journey northwards to Inverness, travelling over the iconic Forth Bridge, through the wild and dramatic scenery of the Cairngorms and past the charming towns of Kingussie, Pitlochry and Aviemore, all decked out in their winter finery.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - The Kyle Line

Today is Christmas Eve and we enjoy a festive journey on the exceptional Kyle Line, a quintessentially Scottish railway that takes us alongside misty lochs and looming mountains. Originating in the historic market town of Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands, work on the single track Kyle of the Lochalsh Railway Line, to give it it's full name, began in 1870 and took twenty-seven years to complete. A magnificent feat of engineering, the route required the manual construction of twenty-nine separate bridges to traverse its mountainous setting and transports us through some of Scotland's most dramatic and spectacular natural landscapes, including the Torridon Hills and gorgeous Highland scenery, all the way to the shores of Loch Alsh. From here, it's a short drive to Eilean Donan Castle, a 13th-century fortress perched atop a tiny island at the confluence of Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh. Back at our hotel, we enjoy a sherry reception accompanied by live entertainment to get us in the Christmas spirit.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 – Christmas Day in Inverness

Our Christmas Day morning begins with a full Scottish breakfast, accompanied by a celebratory Bucks Fizz. Afterwards, you could enjoy a walk alongside the River Ness before a sumptuous Christmas lunch at the hotel. Later, you may wish to watch the Queen's Speech with a dram or two before a festive buffet dinner this evening. Our entertainment tonight features Scottish music and traditional dancing, the perfect way to end this special day.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 - Loch Ness

Our Boxing day excursion takes us by coach to the scenic shores of Loch Ness, part of the Great Glen, a scar-like fault line that runs over 60 miles from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south. We stop off at the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre which details the long history and complex geology of the area, as well as a section dedicated to Nessie herself, the world-famous Loch Ness Monster. We return to Inverness via Fort Augustus and Urquart Castle, set on a headland looking over the loch.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 – Edinburgh

We return to Edinburgh this morning, travelling through the spectacular scenery of the Cairngorms once again. After checking into our hotel, you have free time to go sightseeing, discovering famed attractions still decked out in their festive regalia or enjoying a walk through the streets of the Georgian New Town. Afterwards, you might like to warm up in a traditional pub. We sit down to a final evening meal on our last night.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7 – Homeward Bound

Our Christmas holiday draws to a close today and you're free to begin the journey home once we've checked out of the hotel.

I was really pleased that I made the decision to take this trip. The group, smaller than it would have been, gelled really well. I think we were let down by ScotRail. The tour manager was very efficient and helpful. The hotel in Edinburgh was much more geared up to deal with my having Coeliac disease and therefore follow a gluten free diet but I was rather disappointed by the attitude of the hotel in Inverness who did not seem to be prepared although I had advised of my special diet on booking and I cannot believe that I was the only guest in the hotel who had this need. I enjoyed the excursions on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

Only one issue stopped 5 stars - poor Boxing Day organisation. Otherwise - Hotel, food and drinks - all excellent. Free bar from 18:00 to 22:00. Loads of [free] mulled wine, coffee and tea always available for self help. Great little walk [about 1 hour] from hotel along Ness River, across Ness Islands, and back. Hotel position superb, directly opposite the Castle and an easy walk from the station via the shops. The Boxing Day failure was that we did not get a drive along Loch Ness to Fort Augustus, we did see the Ness Centre which was an interesting and educational experience, after which we rushed back to the hotel for lunch then a dead afternoon. We could easily have had a packed lunch and completed the agenda as it was advertised.
