Jack Daniel's Distillery

Jack Daniel registered his distillery in 1866 - which makes it the oldest in the US. The site has been fully operational ever since, and even today it is still the only distillery where Jack Daniel's Whisky is produced. The site was chosen because it is close to a small cave, which pumps out virtually iron-free water at a constant temperature. This water is used in the whisky production, and is believed to contribute to its unique taste.

The distillery is now recognised as a National Historic Site, and has a visitor centre containing significant artefacts relating to Jack Daniel and his work. Ironically, for such a famous distillery, it is located in Lynchburg in Tennessee - which is in a dry county. This means that, whilst Jack Daniel's Whisky is made in Tennessee and exported all over the world, it cannot be bought or sold in its 'home' town!
