What’s included

Day 1 - Hethersett and Norwich

Our holiday begins at our hotel in Hethersett. This afternoon we head to Norwich, a beautiful and historic city and the capital of the county of Norfolk. We embark on a guided walking tour of the city's Old Town, a rich collection of twisting lanes and narrow passageways. We see Elm Hill, a historic cobbled street with buildings dating back to the Tudor period that now house a jumble of antique shops, boutiques and cafés. We also see the traditional markets, which are still in use today and sell a host of fresh produce.

  • Dinner
Day 2 - The Poppy Line and Sandringham

We head to Cley Marshes for a visit to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, where we learn about why Norfolk is an incredible location for birdwatching. We continue to the quaint coastal town of Sheringham, where we board the steam-hauled North Norfolk Railway for a journey on the Poppy Line to Holt. The heritage line dates back to 1887 and earned its name due to the many flowers that line the route in the summer months. We disembark and continue to Sandringham, the country retreat of the Queen. We explore the Sandringham Estate and gardens and with free time, you could also explore the Sculpture Trail.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 – Hethersett

Today is free for you to explore at your own pace. You could make another visit to Norwich to look around the quaint shops or open-air market. Norwich offers a mixture of museums and galleries, such as the Bridewell Museum, devoted to local trade, and the Castle Museum, exhibiting different periods in Norwich's trading industry. Or, you could venture further afield with a train ride to the coast.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 - Historic Railways and the Norfolk Broads

We travel by coach to Dereham, where we board the Mid-Norfolk Railway for a delightful journey along the restored railway line. Covering 11 miles of Norfolk's countryside, the railway curls through forests and meadows between Dereham and Wymondham. The track dates back to the 1840s, and many of the stations reflect that time period. Arriving in the market town of Wymondham, we travel by coach to Aylsham for a journey on the Bure Valley Railway to Wroxham. Our scenic journey through the Bure Valley is undertaken by a restored steam engine and takes us into the heart of the Norfolk Broads. After disembarking, we enjoy a boat cruise along the wide and picturesque waterways that provide a home for a stunning array of wildlife - bitterns, cuckoos, otters and water voles - many of them unique to Norfolk.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - Home

After breakfast, our tour concludes, and you are free to leave Norwich.

We had a great 5 day break on the Norwich & Norfolk Broads Great Railway Journey. The hotel was excellent, very comfortable and the food was great. We were in a small group which meant we weren’t held up anywhere waiting for people and it also gave us the opportunity to get to know each other. The trips out each day were good. The only downside would be the number of changes of transport from coach to train to coach etc. Maybe the outings should be streamlined a little, if possible, to give longer on steam trains and less time on coaches? Overall it was a great first time experience and we would consider going in another journey in the future.

My wife and I enjoyed this tour. We chose to arrive a day early, otherwise we would have found the actual arrival date too rushed. Previous reviews of the Norwich walking tour as being too rushed we but we found it just right even though my wife has some mobility problems. Our tour manager was excellent. The hotel was was comfortable with friendly staff but we felt that the set dinner could have been more exciting.

Really enjoyed seeing lots of Norfolk either from the coach or from the three volunteer-run railways we went on. Sandringham proved slightly chaotic as the guides were not there when we arrived in the coach park. We had to stay in the coach while the driver went off to investigate. But lovely grounds and helpful guides in the house. Guided tour of Norwich was informative and entertaining. On our free day two of us went back to the Cley-next-the-sea bird reserve which was well worth the longer visit. The Park Farm Hotel, our base, was very comfortable and rather swish, sitting in its own farmland just outside Hethersett. They had a walk guests could do which took you round the perimeter of the 'estate'. We were blessed with perfect weather so a very good, well organised holiday, full of variety.
