The Shatabdi Express trains are some of the fastest in India and are the pride of Indian Railways. Fully air-conditioned and of a far superior standard to most Indian trains, the Shatabdi Express apparently always arrives at the station's best platform! The average speed on most lines is 68mph although the service between Delhi and Kalka and Chandigarh to Delhi can reach speeds of 80mph. During our journeys, we travel in air-conditioned Chair Class.
Setting the standard for luxurious rail travel, guests experience the red-carpet treatment while boarding the Maharajas' Express. Decorated in elegant deep red and gold hues, the train is furnished in a timeless style, but with every modern convenience. Generously sized ensuite deluxe cabins sleep two people in either double or twin beds and come equipped with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flatscreen TV, telephone, safe and wardrobe. Each cabin is attended by a butler, with complimentary tea, coffee, water and snacks available around the clock. Boasting full fine-dining service, the two exquisite restaurant cars provide an array of Indian and international cuisine - freshly prepared by on-board chefs. There is also a bar car, which is a great place to bask in the old-world charm and hospitality along with a relaxing drink. In addition, the Rajah Club is an excellent lounge offering a casual atmosphere as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits.
The Himalayan Queen, affectionately referred to as the 'Toy Train' travels between the Indian town of Kalka and Shimla, capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The Toy Train's 60-mile narrow-gauge track through the Shivalik foothills of the Himalayas is one of three Indian mountain railways which together constitute a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built by British colonists, the Kalka-Shimla Railway opened in 1903. An extraordinary feat of railway engineering, the line negotiates 102 tunnels, more than 860 bridges and around 919 curves. The Toy Train's passengers have plenty of time in which to admire and marvel these features as well as the spectacular mountain panorama that lines the route, tackling the 1 in 33 gradient as the train makes its ascent to Shimla demands a leisurely pace.

Buying tickets for UK train services can be a tricky business - there are so many fares to choose from, each with different rules and restrictions. As you are connecting with an international departure, we strongly recommend that you book a fully flexible ticket to ensure that should the departure times for your holiday change, your rail ticket can allow for these changes.
We can book fully-flexible UK rail tickets from your local station to join your holiday whether this be a European holiday from St Pancras or a UK holiday. The prices are competitive and tickets are not restricted to a particular train or time of day, and in most cases offer you a free choice of routes.

It was a fantastic experience. Good service, excellent food, and a welcome bonus of inclusive alcoholic drinks, which we were not aware of when we booked. The inclusive drinks were mainly locally brands but their quality was comparable to the better known international brands. There were some disadvantages which other prospective travellers may want to know about, but which did not significantly detract from our overall experience. The train moved overnight and was sometimes bumpy and noisy. Some of the stops also were fairly short and did not give enough time to do justice to the place, particularly Jaipur, Ranthanbore and Varanasi, but that is unavoidable on this type of holiday.

This was a truly memorable journey. Before boarding the train, we visited Shimla and Amritsar. Seeing the Golden Temple at night will live with me forever. The welcome, food and service on the Maharajas’ Express were first class. Our tour manager, Georgina, was superb, nothing was too much trouble. We saw many of the great sites, including tha Taj Mahal and Amber Fort and witnessed the Aarti ceremony from a boat on the Ganges at Varanasi. We had no stomach upsets during the whole time by following routine hygiene procedures.
