DAY2Welcome to tropical Rio

Touching down in Rio this morning, we are transferred to our hotel in Leme, overlooking the famed Copacabana Beach. Here, there is time to unwind and settle into your new surroundings. You might choose to make the most of the hotel's facilities, including a rooftop swimming pool and a restaurant with outdoor seating, where sweeping views stretch across Rio's famously blue waters.

For those who might like to start exploring, our location on the main street of the Leme district puts you in the perfect place for discovering the nearby beaches, visiting the historic Leme Fort or simply soaking up the atmosphere from one of the neighbourhood's cafés and bars.

Regrouping this evening, we enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant. Rio's cuisine is a flavourful mix of indigenous, Afro-Brazilian and Portuguese influences, with fresh seafood, grilled meats and tropical fruits all featuring prominently.

DAY3Rio’s iconic landmarks

After breakfast, we set out to discover the iconic landmarks that have made Rio de Janeiro one of the world's most recognisable cities. Our first stop is Corcovado Mountain, where we ascend through the lush Tijuca Forest aboard a historic, electric cogwheel railway to the summit. Standing beneath the towering Christ the Redeemer statue, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, we are rewarded with spectacular views across the city, its golden beaches and dramatic granite peaks.

Continuing our tour, we visit the striking Metropolitan Cathedral, celebrated for its distinctive design and beautiful stained-glass panels, before we pass along Rio's scenic waterfront.

Later, we board the famous cable cars to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain, via Urca Hill. Rising high above Guanabara Bay, this iconic peak offers another unforgettable perspective of Rio, and there's time at the top to enjoy the spectacular viewpoints before returning to the hotel. This evening, you are free to dine at leisure, perhaps at the hotel's restaurant which provides an elegant setting, serving contemporary cuisine with views over the coastline.

DAY4The Brazilian side of the Iguazú Falls

Bidding farewell to Rio after breakfast this morning, we transfer to the airport and board an internal flight to Iguazú, home to one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. On arrival, we head straight to the Brazilian side of the Iguazú Falls, where our first encounter with this magnificent UNESCO-listed landscape awaits.

Accompanied by a local guide, we follow scenic walkways through the lush subtropical rainforest, home to an abundance of colourful birds and wildlife. As we make our way along the panoramic trail, breathtaking views unfold across the vast horseshoe of more than 275 cascading waterfalls that stretch over the border between Brazil and Argentina. Crossing the walkway above the river and ascending by elevator to the Salto Floriano viewing platform, we are rewarded with spectacular vistas revealing the sheer scale and power of the falls.

After time to admire the extraordinary landscape, we transfer to our hotel and check in.

DAY5Viewing the Iguazú Falls from Argentina

Today, we cross into Argentina to experience the Iguazú Falls from a different perspective. While yesterday revealed the breathtaking panorama of this natural wonder, today brings us closer to the cascades themselves.

Travelling aboard the Rainforest Ecological Train, we are transported through the lush subtropical jungle to reach a series of different viewpoints, keeping watch for colourful toucans and the resident capuchin monkeys that inhabit the area. As the roar of the water grows even louder, we continue to one of the falls' most dramatic viewpoints overlooking the awe-inspiring Devil's Throat, where immense volumes of water plunge into the gorge below, creating a curtain of mist and rainbows.

Returning to our hotel later this afternoon, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Perhaps unwind after today's explorations or take advantage of the hotel's convenient location close to a selection of shops, cafés and restaurants, where you can enjoy dinner independently this evening.

A day at sea provides the perfect opportunity to settle into life on board while discovering more about the extraordinary landscapes we are travelling towards. Throughout the journey, the Expedition Team hosts a fascinating programme of engaging lectures and talks, exploring topics from Antarctic history and wildlife to climate change and polar conservation, helping to bring this remote region to life before we arrive.

DAY10First footsteps on the Antarctic Peninsula

Over the next five days, we explore the breathtaking landscapes and remarkable wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula during daily landings and Zodiac boat cruises with our experienced Expedition Team. Their expert knowledge ensures each day's itinerary is determined by the weather, wind and ice conditions - making each voyage unique. This flexible approach allows us to make the most of our time in what is considered the last great wilderness on Earth.

Boarding small expedition boats that seat approximately ten people, our first landing on the Antarctic Peninsula awaits today, an unforgettable opportunity to step ashore in one of the world's most remote landscapes. Depending on conditions, we may visit remarkable locations such as Half Moon Island*, where rocky shores are home to thriving chinstrap penguin colonies.

Aboard Zodiac boats, we cruise among sculptural icebergs and towering glaciers, keeping watch for spectacular wildlife. Between November and March, Antarctica experiences its busiest wildlife season, making this one of the best times to witness a range of extraordinary creatures in their natural habitat.

*Please note: throughout your Antarctic exploration, landing sites and cruising routes are carefully chosen by the Expedition Team according to local conditions.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY11Discovering Antarctica’s dramatic landscapes

Today combines another peninsula landing with a Zodiac boat cruise through iceberg filled waters. We may explore Cuverville Island*, renowned for one of the Antarctic Peninsula's largest gentoo penguin colonies, where thousands of birds nest against a spectacular backdrop of glaciers and snow-covered peaks. On each landing site, the team will provide information on the site and tips on where to see the animals.

Perhaps the most surprising part of Antarctica is the silence. It's a stillness that's broken every so often by local inhabitants - the wildlife. Whales begin to arrive in greater numbers by December and January, and with our cameras at the ready, we continue scanning the surrounding waters for humpback whales, minke whales, seals and the many seabirds that thrive in this extraordinary polar wilderness.

For those wishing to immerse themselves even further in this incredible environment, optional excursions are available to book on board, including guided sea kayaking and snowshoeing, offering a unique perspective on the continent's untouched landscapes.

Every corner of the Antarctic Peninsula reveals a different perspective of this remarkable frozen wilderness. Immense glaciers tumble towards tranquil bays, blue icebergs drift silently across mirror-like waters and snow-covered mountains rise dramatically from the sea.

Depending on conditions, today's landing may bring us to beautiful Neko Harbour*, one of the very few places in the area where you may land on the Antarctic mainland. Surrounded by soaring peaks and an active glacier, this spectacular location perfectly captures the immense scale and pristine beauty of Antarctica.

Back onboard, the programme of lectures and talks led by experts continues, offering fascinating insights into the wildlife, history, geology and ecosystems of the region.

Do I need to complete a Medical Screening Form?

Yes, as you'll be travelling to remote destinations where medical facilities are limited, particularly in polar regions, all guests are required to complete a Medical Screening Form before travelling to Antarctica. This helps the expedition team understand any health considerations in advance and ensures the safety and wellbeing of everyone on board.

When should I complete the Medical Screening Form?

Once you have booked your tour, you will receive a link to independently complete the Medical Screening Form. Your signed Medical Screening Form should be completed no earlier than four months and no later than six weeks before departure, giving Vikand Medical enough time to review your information ahead of your expedition. This is a requirement of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), which requires all visitors to Antarctic to be medically cleared prior to their journey.
