Frequently Asked Questions

How many solo travellers are there on rail holidays?

While every holiday and departure varies, typically up to 15% of the total number of guests for any escorted tour can be composed of solo travellers.

Where do solo rail holidays go?

Because each of our escort rail holidays features pricing for solo travellers, there is no limit to where Great Rail Journeys can take you. Choose a short getaway close to home in the British Isles or a grand adventure beyond, taking you to continents across the ocean and bucket-listed destinations you have only dreamed of.

Will I have my own room?

Yes, solo travellers will always have their own room. In most cases, this is a double or twin room for sole occupancy, offering the same quality and amenities as those shared by other guests. On some tours, standard single rooms may be provided, depending on hotel availability. We aim to be transparent about these options so you can book with confidence.

How are meals for solo travellers?

During planned group meals, you can opt to sit by yourself or ask your Tour Manager to pair you with other solo travellers or a table with an empty seat. A convivial atmosphere and well-planned days allow conversation to flow naturally and make dining experiences memorable no matter where you sit. During free meals, you can ask your Tour Manager for recommendations nearby or set out on your own, tasting your way through your destination - keeping only your preferences in mind.

Is it easy to make friends?

The adventurous spirit and exciting atmosphere of our holidays makes it easy to bond as the days unfold. You will be surrounded by like-minded travellers who you are free to socialise with as much or as little as you prefer. If you want to make friends, a Great Rail Journeys holiday is a wonderful place to do so; however, if you want to spend your travel time connecting with yourself instead, we can help you foster an environment to do just that.

Will I be required to join group excursions?

Our itineraries are built with your enjoyment in mind, and while group excursions are a fantastic way to get an in-depth understanding of your location, you are by no means required to join. Should you prefer to sightsee on your own, let your Tour Manager know, and they can help you break away from the group or provide local recommendations that pique your interest.

Is there anything else I should keep in mind as a solo traveller?

Keep in mind that at times you will be required to transport your own luggage during your journey. Please ensure that you can carry any bags and haul any suitcases independently and that you can walk distances of up to half a mile while doing so. Additionally, before booking, look at your chosen tour's mobility rating to make sure it is compatible with your abilities and that you will not need assistance with boarding, sightseeing or using mobility aids.
