Britain's Coastal Railways

Misty mountain, bustling cities, rolling countryside, there are so many incredible attractive elements that make up the UK. Arguably, the most beautiful of these is the glorious stretch of coastline which winds its way around all four nations of the isles. Picturesque cliffs gaze over blue oceans, shimmering white beaches greet the waves, and who can forget the promenades, harbours and piers of Britain's cheerful seaside towns?

The good news is that Britain's excellent selection of coastal railways are an absolute delight to discover and they criss-cross all over the islands, travelling over the cliffs and pulling into pretty coastal stations. Some are heritage, some are panoramic but all are innately enchanting in their own way.

Great Rail Journeys offer a dazzling range of coastal railway journeys for your perusal, take a look below and discover rail holidays to England, Wales, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland!

“We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. It visited some very interesting locations that were well integrated. The introductions were very good, especially the one on the canal trip. The visiting academic's talk after dinner came at a rather sleepy point when most people were not at their most receptive. We were sorry not to have had more free time in both Manchester and Newcastle to extend the context of the tour.

“Enjoyed it immensely. Lots of travelling but interesting sights to see. The only big letdown was the Hotel in Inverness. This Hotel is not suitable for GRJ people. Buffet Dinner which was awful, and not enough of, as was Breakfast. No proper Bar or Lounge Area. Also Rooms new but not space for for putting things on. Had to leave things in Suitcase. Staff nice but slow.

“Excellent tour and a great tour manager. Just a couple of comments. 1) could do with all hotels being in town and city centres not on the outskirts or in the countryside. 2) tried to pack too much in which led to many early starts in the morning.

“We enjoyed our trip, especially the Jacobite steam journey. We would have liked more time at Eilean Donan castle and Culloden battlefield. It was a shame we were never introduced to the other members of our group .We had to share a coach and train with another Great Rail Journeys group which meant the coach was very full. The presentations at Aileen Donan castle and Culloden were excellent. Our tour guide Ulric kept us well informed of each days activities in advance.

“The holiday introduced my wife and I to an area of Scotland we knew little about and had never visited before. We were stunned by its beauty, the friendliness of its people and the variety and value of the places to visit. Great Rail organised a packed itinerary and delivered it almost without fault. The two hotels we stayed at were comfortable and the food at one - the Stonefield Castle - was outstanding. The shine was taken off the whole holiday by circumstances beyond Great Rail's control - namely the threat and actuality of national rail strikes.
