What’s included

Day 1 - Dawlish Warren

  • Dinner
Day 2 - Greenway and the English Riviera by steam boat and train

We discover the English Riviera's seaside atmosphere, beginning with a steam boat cruise between Totnes and Dartmouth. After free time to explore elegant riverside Dartmouth, we cross the Dart Estuary by ferry, making the journey to Kingswear. We transfer to Greenway, an atmospheric Georgian house that was the holiday home of Agatha Christie. We enjoy a glimpse into the life of the writer as we explore the house and grounds, where you can see Agatha Christie's bedroom, library, and outside, stroll amongst the walled gardens. From Greenway, we continue on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, which takes us along the scenic Devon coastline and the tranquil River Dart to Paignton. We take a coach back to the hotel.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Dawlish Warren

Today is free. You could spend time relaxing at the hotel, which is set within 19 acres of woodlands and surrounded by lawns and gardens. Nearby, the famous nature reserve at Dawlish Warren offers up an unspoiled area of natural beauty, with grassland and sand dunes that are home to hundreds of flowering plants and an array of birds. If you'd like to explore further, one option is to take a scenic rail trip along the coast to Torquay, often referred to as the 'English Riviera'. You could stroll along the seafront, following the 'Agatha Christie Mile' for more insights into the famous novelist. You could also visit historic Torre Abbey, now a museum and art gallery.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 - The Dawlish Coast

We transfer to nearby Dawlish, with free time to enjoy the traditional seaside town. You could experience some nostalgic activities, such as a visit to the amusements or fish and chips followed by ice cream. This afternoon, we continue to Buckfastleigh where we join the South Devon Railway for a steam-hauled journey along the valley of the River Dart. Built in 1872, this heritage line runs to Totnes on an award-winning route that showcases the fine scenery and cheery stations of Southern England. The trains used here are beautiful old steam engines which follow a seven-mile route past babbling rivers and charming woodland. We end the day with a visit to Buckfast Abbey, part of a Benedictine monastery dating back to 1134 that's home to a working community of monks.

The dinners were far to early-we had no time to meet any other guests. On the trip to Dawlish I had to move seats twice, as a commuter had paid for that specific seat. I dont like to be rushed around sight seeing.! I took plenty of clothes so that I could change at night, but never got the chance. I was very disappointed and will never go with your company again. the courier was very good but that is all i can say

Great Rail did a good job their tour guide was really good. The hotel service though let them down, especially dinner each night, which was mediocre and spoilt by poor and very slow service

We enjoyed our break in Torquay. The Imperial Hotel is lovely. We upgraded to a superior bedroom and had the benefit of a large balcony and amazing sea view. The trip to Dartmouth was very interesting but unfortunately we were only able to stay in the town for an hour before returning to the hotel. There was very little to see and do in Dawlish but the coast looked spectacular from the train. The breakfasts in the hotel were amazing. Piping hot food and lots of alternatives. Dinners were a little disappointing. There were not nearly enough staff. Those that were there worked extremely hard to get food to tables but sadly some food was very late arriving and also cold! These are still difficult times for the leisure industry but I hope to return to this hotel when all restrictions are over.

Good trip with excellent days out. Hotel was excellent. Room was very clean and ours had dual aspect as it was on the corner of the building. The service in the restaurant was less than expected due to a possible shortage of staff.
