Cadenabbia

Cadenabbia di Griante is one town, split into two parts. The Cadenabbia part of town sits right on the lakeside, while Griante is located 50 metres above, in the hills overlooking Cadenabbia. Cadenabbia is one of the many beautiful resorts on the lake, where old hotel buildings line the shore, separated from the water by a road.

The resort's most famous former residents could not be more different: A house in the centre of Griante was the summer home of Achille Ratti, who became better known as Pope Pius XI - the Alpine Pope. He would regularly walk from Griante up to San Martino to pray on the mountain. In contrast to this respected religious figure, the castle of Griante was occupied by a man named Antonio the Crazy - the pirate of Lake Como - who made Griante his stronghold until he was killed by an arquebus. Unfortunately for the residents of Cadenabbia di Griante and merchants using Lake Como, Antonio was succeeded by his son, who became known as John the Crazy!
