About the tour

Explore the Amalfi Coast, without a doubt one of Europe's most visually stunning regions. Starting with two nights in Rome, we continue to Sorrento, a pretty town that looks over the stunning Bay of Naples and is the gateway to Capri, the Amalfi Coast and the lost city of Pompeii.

Highlights

What’s included

Itinerary

Day 1 – London and Lyon

We meet at London St Pancras and take the Eurostar to Paris. We change trains for Lyon, a historic French city on the banks of the Rhône and Saône. We check into a local hotel here where we spend the night.

Includes
  • Dinner
  • Eurostar Meal
Day 2 – Rome

Leaving Lyon behind, we continue to the Italian capital of Rome. The ancient city is a feast for all of the senses, from its striking fountains to its intimate cafés filled with the inviting scent of Italian coffee. Rome's architecture charts the passage of time as clearly as anywhere in Europe, with wonderfully preserved monuments from the early Romans and buildings with distinctive medieval, Renaissance and Baroque features. The most famous sights are a real wonder to behold - no photo can prepare you for the awesome sight of the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain close up.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 – Rome

We get to the heart of ancient Rome today on a guided city tour, seeing the very best that this enticing city has to offer. Our tour takes in the Roman Forum, once the political and religious centre for the Roman Empire and now a striking ruin. We also see the theatrical Trevi Fountain, Rome's most famous - and, arguably, most beautiful - fountain, which was built for Pope Clement XII and almost fills the small Piazza di Trevi. Later, you're free to savour the sights and sounds of Rome. You could visit St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican, stroll through the atmospheric streets, ascend the Spanish Steps, or relax with a coffee or ice cream in one of the city's squares.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 4 – Sorrento

Bidding farewell to the wonders of Rome, we travel onwards to Sorrento. The picturesque coastal town sits in its own 'mini bay' within the vast Bay of Naples, perched on a natural terrace that stretches along the top of dramatic cliffs overlooking the water. The narrow, cobbled streets feature a charming combination of Renaissance palace buildings and Romanesque churches, and lemon orchards cover the hillsides and farmland around the town. Sorrento is also famous for its citrus products, such as Limoncello - a digestive made with lemon rind, which we sample during a stroll through the town's cobbled streets and colourful squares.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 – The Amalfi Coast

We uncover the beauty of the Amalfi Coast today from its glistening waters. First, we cruise to Positano, where pastel houses seemingly tumble into the sea and, at the beach, fishermen haul their wooden boats as they did decades ago. We continue to Amalfi, the 'Jewel of the Amalfi Coast'. Here, you could visit St Andrew's Cathedral, which overlooks the Piazza del Duomo. Back in Sorrento, we enjoy a true treat for dinner. We head to a local cookery school for a pizza-making experience, discovering the secrets to this revered Italian dish before sitting down to enjoy our delicious creations.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 – Pompeii

We catch the Campania Express which takes us to Pompeii, the world-renowned city that was buried by ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. The ash froze Pompeii and its residents in time, and it lay forgotten about until its rediscovery in 1748. Now, after having spent almost two millennia buried under the ash, Pompeii is the best-preserved Roman city in the world. We take a fascinating guided tour around Pompeii, seeing the shops, villas and restaurants that make up the mesmerising city, as well as the Amphitheatre and Grand Theatre.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7 – Sorrento

Today is free to enjoy the relaxed town of Sorrento. You could explore the narrow streets filled with pretty Renaissance buildings, or perhaps relax in the central square - a great place to watch the world go by. A trip to Chiesa di San Francesco comes highly recommended. Situated beside the Villa Communale Park, the beautiful church features Arabic porticos and bougainvillea blooms drape majestically across its interlaced arches - truly, a beautiful sight.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 8 – Herculaneum

We travel by coach to Herculaneum, a city of Roman ruins destroyed by an earthquake in 62 AD. Thanks to its close proximity to Mt Vesuvius, the eruption that blasted Pompeii had a similar effect here, fossilising much of the town. We make our way through the preserved ruins, taking in the fascinating sights of ancient life. We continue to a local agriturismo, a type of Italian farmhouse, where we're served a traditional lunch, savouring the chance to sample some excellent local produce.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 9 – Sorrento

Enjoy another day to yourself in lovely Sorrento. You could soak up the views on a walk around the town - on a clear day, the views from Sorrento include the city of Naples, renowned Mount Vesuvius and the charming island of Ischia. Otherwise head to one of the many inviting cafés or restaurants the town has to offer and indulge in some delicious cuisine. Sorrento is a perfect place to enjoy a long, lazy lunch made using the best of local ingredients, ideally while looking out over the glittering ocean. Try Scialatielli ai frutti di mare, a traditional seafood pasta dish found in many restaurants here.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 10 – Capri Cruise

We enjoy a cruise to Capri, just off the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Capri is one of the Mediterranean's most idyllic islands and is famed for its breathtaking scenery, azure shores and rocky cliffs. The island has attracted writers and artists for centuries, and today is a popular destination for glamorous travellers from around the globe. Our visit to Capri includes a ticket on the funicular railway, which carries visitors to the centre of the town. You have some free time here, and you'll find plenty of chic little coffee shops and glitzy cocktail bars to while away your time in. This evening, back on the mainland, we enjoy a final Sorrentine dinner together.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 11 – Turin or London

We say goodbye to Sorrento today, transferring to the city of Naples. Here, you either travel to the airport for your return flight to the UK or board a train to Turin, where we check into our hotel for an overnight stay.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 12 – London

Leaving Turin, we travel to Paris where we join the Eurostar to London St Pancras.

Includes
  • Breakfast
  • Eurostar Meal

Advertised 1st class rail travel was standard class and coach travel on both 4 hour rotes through the alps. The hotel in Sorrento was in the basement it was apalling, dirty and smelly. After 2 days of complaints we, along with 2 other couples, were moved to another hotel. Paid for a premium holiday and got sub standard in many areas.

Very disappointed to say the least. Brochure and website promised so much but definitely not the trip we booked. The brochure says 1st class rail travel, we never once had 1st class and were put in economy whilst travelling through the Alps therefore missing the spectacular scenery. If that wasn’t bad enough we had a four hour coach journey from Naples to Turin on the return something that was suspiciously missing from the original itinerary. We were told we would be going on the same coach we were on from our hotel near Sorrento (more on that later) which had frayed and smelly seats with broken handles and no toilet facilities. We were told we were being picked up at 6am and wouldn’t be able stop which was a major concern for a group in their 60s and 70s. As a group we refused to go on that particular bus and spent the whole evening worrying about it. The Tour title leads you to believe that one of the hotels is in Sorrento, our Hotel Majestic wasn’t and I have noticed quite a few previous reviews saying the same, the brochure says it has lovely views of the bay and Vesuvius, correct, if you’re on the roof, but if your room is like ours below ground on floor -1 you’ll only have view of a wall and a damp smell. This again has been mentioned in previous reviews by other people. We were asked to stay there for 2 nights and would be moved to a higher floor (3 couples), this was retracted and were told there was nothing they could do, by now the relationship between our tour manager and the hotel had completely broken down so we were now on our own. At one point we had three of our party in tears. After much arguing directly with the hotel manager and hotel owner 2 of the couples (myself included) managed to move to a hotel in the same road and although it was a massive improvement on hotel Majestic we still didn’t have the view of the bay and the room was a bit on the small side which we wouldn’t have booked ourselves if we had arranged the trip, this wasn’t the hotel’s fault as it was the only room available and by now we were truly grateful. The original (near Sorrento) hotel’s food was appalling, on the 1st night we were offered one choice, Pork, and that was it. We were all made to feel we were an inconvenience. A few other points. Hotel is on a hill with about 20 steps (no ramp) leading to reception. The pool has a submerged wall. I thought this was illegal (certainly in Spain) so if you’ve got young children beware. The Hotel isn’t in Sorrento so if you fancy walking (no shuttle bus) along twisting roads with no pavements make sure you’ve got good insurance. We expected a knowledgeable tour manager, by her own admission she hadn’t done this tour and clearly had to wing it making it a stressful experience for the group from start to finish. We made calls to Great Rail including their emergency number and basically got fobbed off, being told they only have a skeleton staff at weekends and they were unable to get hold of anyone. We have now been back a week and as i write the review I haven’t been contacted by Great Rail which I find a complete insult.

I't was a great trip though quite hot, the day trips along the Amalfi coast were very good along with the views, I Would have liked however an extra day stop before Amafi as we seem to be traveling quite a lot before Amalfi

Overall the trip was excellent with superb Tour Manager, Paul. The only disappointment was the food in the hotels, particularly in Sorrento. While accepting that meals had to be within budget, the quality and choice was poor, particularly when compared to other guests who were not part of our group. The situation was even worse for my wife who is vegan. I was assured beforehand that all hotels and Eurostar were informed of this but only Eurostar catered for her. I did not particularly like the fact that the group had to dine at 7pm rather than at a time of our individual choosing. I would have preferred to only have breakfast included and make our own arrangements for our evening meal.
