Our journey on the narrow gauge Corgo Line takes us 60 miles (96 km) through the heart of Portugal's beautiful Douro region, from the town of Peso da Regua to Vila Real. The railway follows the left bank of the River Corgo as it winds its way along a pretty gorge and into the mountains, reaching an altitude of 1,181 feet (360 metres). We pass through a landscape covered in whitewashed villages, sprawling vineyards, olive groves and pine trees, before arriving at our destination. Vila Real is the home of the Casa de Mateus, the baroque 18th century mansion which is the home of Mateus Rosé wine.
