Unveil a land of ethereal beauty and unparalleled charm

Norway holidays by rail

As spectacular as they are, Norway's famous fjords - u-shaped coastal valleys created by retreating icebergs and subsequently filled by the waters of the Atlantic - tend to hog the limelight in any discussion of the country's natural beauty.

As guests on any of Great Rail Journeys' superb rail tours of Norway will soon discover, fjords are only one aspect of a country that unfolds one extraordinary landscape after another. From the comfort of a seat on Norway's Bergen Railway our guests are afforded panoramic views of the glaciers and ice fields, forests of conifers, mountain ranges and rocky coastline as they journey through this remarkable destination.

Norway is filled with expansive landscapes, ranging from rugged wilderness to pristine valleys and coastal islands. It's well known for its majestic fjords and towering mountains along the west coast as well as a choice of fantastic cities to explore. In essence, Norway offers a wealth of captivating adventures to keep you wanting more.

Norway holiday experiences

The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, create breathtaking displays of vibrant colours in the Arctic skies of Norway. These celestial ribbons of green, pink, and purple dance across the dark expanse, forming a wonderful natural phenomenon. The best places to witness this magical spectacle are the remote regions of Tromsø or Lofoten. Here, the lights illuminate the winter nights, captivating both locals and visitors with their awe-inspiring cosmic ballet.

The Midnight Sun

During Norway's summer months, the Midnight Sun, a fascinating natural event, brings weeks of continuous daylight to the landscape. As the Earth tilts towards the sun, Norwegians enjoy longer daylight hours, especially above the Arctic Circle where the sun doesn't set. This mesmerising occurrence turns the country's beautiful scenery into a dreamlike spectacle, providing a unique and awe-inspiring experience for those lucky enough to witness the sun's radiant glow at midnight.

Charming towns and cities

Norway showcases a captivating array of charming cities. The capital, Oslo, captures attention with its sleek architecture and vibrant cultural scene. Nestled in the stunning fjords, Flåm enchants visitors with its scenic beauty, highlighted by the renowned Flåm Railway and in Bergen, you'll discover colourful wharves and a rich maritime history that exudes a timeless charm. Together, these places showcase Norway's diversity, from cosmopolitan elegance to the natural beauty of its fjord landscapes.

Norwegian cuisine

Norwegian cuisine reflects the country's rich maritime and agricultural heritage. Seafood, particularly salmon, cod, and herring, takes centre stage. At breakfast, smørbrød is a must, these open-faced sandwiches feature a variety of toppings such as fish, cheese, and cold cuts. For a sweet treat, try krumkake (thin, crisp waffle-like cookies). Embrace the local food markets for authentic flavours, and don't miss the chance to savour brown cheese (brunost) or indulge in a traditional Norwegian salmon feast.

Norwegian Trains

Norway's railways not only showcase engineering excellence but also allow travellers to immerse themselves in the country's natural wonders. The Bergen Railway, which spans 308 miles from Oslo to Bergen, is considered one of the world's most picturesque train journeys travelling through snow-covered mountains and deep valleys. The Flåm Railway also offers a scenic journey descending from high mountains to Aurlandsfjord with stunning views of waterfalls and lush greenery. Meanwhile, the Dovre Railway serves as a crucial north-south link connecting Oslo to Trondheim.

“Very well organised trip - rep was one step ahead of any problems - one morning we woke to pouring rain and we were walking to the port to go on a cruise to Flam. By the time we finished breakfast our rep Charles had organised and paid for taxis to make sure we arrived dry and ready to enjoy the next stage of our tour - excellent service

“An enjoyable trip with a varied itinerary and spectacular scenery. We had the added bonus of an enthusiastic and friendly tour manager and a great group of fellow travellers. A lot of time was spent on trains and coaches, more of the latter than expected, but there were constant wonderful views - even when raining!
