Treno Natura
The Treno Natura, or Nature Train runs on the tourist Railway of Val d'Orcia - a fascinating and evocative area of Tuscany. Since 2014 the area has been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as 'an exceptional example of how the natural landscape was redesigned in the Renaissance period 'and because 'its landscape was celebrated by the painters of the Sienese School that flourished in the Renaissance period'. The images of the Val d'Orcia have become an icon of the Renaissance, and indeed of Tuscany - rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, dotted with cypresses, beech and chestnut woods, where ancient villages and rural farmhouses remain unchanged by the passing of time.
The 52km route has been used exclusively by the Nature Train since 1996, and takes us to small village festivals, particularly in the autumn months. The route connects the provinces of Siena (Asciano) and Grosseto (Monte Antico), in the most authentic heart of Tuscany, and provides a truly slow travel experience. On board the Nature Train means travelling in the name of history and gastronomic traditions, from Siena through the heart of this spectacular territory that offers endless tourist attractions among enchanting medieval villages.
