Trenitalia

Connecting the romantic splendour of Italy, crisscrossing its way through Renaissance cities, along golden coastline and around ancient volcanoes, Trenitalia is Italy's superb rail network. Featuring an excellent fleet of well-maintained and modern trains, this rail company is owned by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, which is run by the Italian government. Operating regional and national services, Trenitalia prides itself on its punctuality and the huge range of services provided by the operator, several of these which include railways such as the Frecciarossia, the Frecciargento and the Frecciblanco services.

Italy by rail is simply stunning. From the flowing green hills and elegant cities of the north, to the Mediterranean climes and the enchanting beaches of the south, an Italian rail journey is not only one of the easiest ways to travel, but is also one of the most panoramic and beautiful. Circumnavigating the magnificent Mt Etna, gliding down the Amalfi Coast, entering the stunning Milan railway station, these are all experiences which are hugely enhanced from the comfort of an air-conditioned Trenitalia carriage.

“Very nice tour of Tuscany for 7 nights in mid-May. Stayed in pleasant Spa town with good rail connenctions to Florence, Lucca and Pisa. The other two day trips were by coach. A very nice evening on a family wine estate in the hills, with superb meal and variety of wines to have with. As always with Great Rail the Tour Manager was really excellent. Also good hotels for overnight there and back. Pick ups by coach where necessary all fine and on time, no trains missed and no one lost. This was my 12th trip with Great Rail, going as far back as 2006

“We had a fantastic time with GRJ and their Grand Tour of Italy. We met wonderful people along the way, and saw fantastic parts of the country. Italy is a very busy place this year, nearly everywhere was full to the rafters! Even when the weather let us down most days, the whole group carried on and we made the most of it. Our tour manager, Georgina, was an absolute star, ensuring every thing was in place and going beyond to make sure nothing got in the way of us enjoying our time. The train journeys were comfortable and scenic. Hotels on the whole were nice, albeit 2 were not really in ideal locations insofar as after a good day of walking, on the nights meals were not provided meant you had a 25 minute walk back into Florence which is a tad too long or a journey on a water bus back into Venice to go eat as everything shut down in Murano of an evening. On the whole we loved it and would strongly recommend it being a great way to make memories. TIP: Pre-book the attractions before you go as tickets are not available on the day and GRJ don't actually inform you of this. It was a phone call from the tour manager 2 days before the trip which left little time really to get your head together to where you wanted to go to.

“This is a holiday I long wanted to go on seeing Pompeii and Herculaneum. It did not disappoint though the weather was not quite as expected due to some rain and low cloud. Amalfi and it’s history is amazing. The Archaeological Museum in Naples should be a must as well.

“Lovely Place. Weather in Mid May was not good for 50% of the time. Excellent Tour Leader / Manager. We had problems with return of our suitcase. Overall, Very enjoyable holiday and notably, excellent Hotel.
