Originally launched in 1928 to compete with the Orient Express, the Trans Europ Express ran between the Hoekvan Holland and Basel in Switzerland. These original services were successful, but were withdrawn in 1954. However, the Rheingold train (along with a few others) was re-introduced to the Trans Europ Express routes in 1962. Seen as a fore runner of the ICE trains, its elegance and style were in many ways ahead of its time, which made it popular with passengers. Owing to the abundance of other high-speed services, the Rheingold was decisively withdrawn in 1987, but was quickly preserved as a fantastic heritage train, along with its unique observation car. The train often still runs at 125 miles per hour, which makes it the fastest heritage train in the world.
