As well as offering Switzerland's longest continuous stretch of rack railway at 12 miles (19.2km), the Wengernalpbahn was built to different gauge to the Bernese Oberland Railway and the Jungfraubahn. This means that we make two changes of trains during our journey up to Jungfraujoch, giving us the opportunity to stretch our legs and take in the magnificent Alpine scenery.

As we leave Lauterbrunnen, the views are outstanding. To our right, above the White Lütschine River valley, are the Staubbach Falls and to our left is the massif of Männlichen, Tschuggen and Lauberhorn. A little further along, the village of Mürren, which is situated dramatically on a shelf of rock, comes into view. We pass through the car-free resort of Wengen and continue towards Allmend, climbing ever closer towards the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Just after Allmend we cross the tree line and pass through peaceful Wengernalp and travel onwards to Kleine Scheidegg. Spectacularly situated on the saddle of rock between the Lauberhorn and the Jungfrau, Kleine Scheidegg offers some wonderful views of Grindelwald and Mürren as well as the awe-inspiring peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
