Day 2 – Wengen

After a relaxed morning in Strasbourg, we board the train to Basel, climbing into the majestic Swiss mountains for six nights in peaceful Wengen, a traffic-free mountain resort. Perched on a mountain ledge with breathtaking views, Wengen can only be reached by train, adding to its romantic charm and its stunning surroundings are the picturesque Staubbach Falls, the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and the majestic Jungfrau massif, all of which can be viewed from the village.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Gimmelwald

After some free time to get to know your surroundings, we transfer to nearby Gimmelwald, where we visit a working farm of cows, calves goats and pigs. We meet the farmers and learn about how they produce organic meat and dairy products, before trying these local specialties for ourselves. Back in Wengen, you may like to pick up one of the many mountain trails that begin in the village. This idyllic destination has long been a haven for nature lovers and hikers.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 – The Wengen-Männlichen Cableway

We travel on this innovative cableway, built in 1954 to connect Wengen with the mountains. Within five minutes, the altitude reaches 9,744 feet and we arrive in Männlichen, where there are sensational views from the café. After time to look around, we continue to Grindelwald aboard Europe's longest gondola cableway. This pretty Alpine village is one of Europe's oldest mountain resorts. Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, there are many popular walking paths in the area or you may just like to explore the town, visit some shops and relax in a café.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - The Jungfrau Railway

We enjoy a highlight of our holiday today, a journey along the Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch. We climb from Kleine Scheidegg into a tunnel cut through the Eiger, pausing at observation stops along the way for spectacular views of the valley below. Trundling past iconic mountains and beside glacial lakes we travel to places no other form of transport can reach. At the top, the scenery is nothing short of staggering. The azure blue of a crisp Swiss sky contrasts with brilliant white snow and lush green hills. With free time at the summit station, the highest in Europe, you could explore the Ice Palace or visit the Sphinx Terrace for superb views across the Aletsch Glacier.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - The Schilthorn and Trümmelbach Falls

An excursion by cable car takes us to the summit of the Schilthorn, home to a revolving restaurant that features 360 degree views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Named Piz Gloria in honour of the James Bond film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', there are many 007 references to spot. After some free time, we visit the Trümmelbach Falls. Nestled deep in a canyon, these ten waterfalls have carved a path through the hillside, making them Europe's largest subterranean waterfalls.

Includes
  • Breakfast
Day 7 - Wengen

Today is free to explore, possibly with your included Swiss Travel Card. You could journey up to Schynige Platte, travelling in restored 19th-century carriages, or ride on the Brienz Rothorn Railway, powered almost entirely by steam. Beginning in the lakeside town of Brienz, the rack-and-pinion line traverses a number of bridges and steep, stony mountain trails as it continues to climb. For much of the route, the glittering waters of Lake Brienz can be seen and, before long, we reach the first of three passing loops for oncoming locomotives. The end of the line is the summit of Rothorn, 7,362 feet above sea level.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8 - Wengen and London

After breakfast, we leave Wengen, taking the train to Paris via Interlaken and Basel. Here, we connect with the Eurostar service back to London St Pancras.

My wife says it is the best holiday she has ever been on. I loved it as well. It was well organised and Philip Ellson was an excellent tour guide. The scenery was stunning. Thank you so much. We loved Wengen and all the surrounding area.
