About the tour

The spectacular mountain landscapes and lush meadows of the majestic Alps await us in Switzerland's famous Bernese Oberland. Ride the Jungfrau Express to the 'top of Europe', ascend the Schilthorn, visit a local working farm and experience the tremendous Trümmelbach Falls.

What’s included

Day 1 - London and Strasbourg

Departing London St Pancras on the Eurostar to Paris, we continue to Strasbourg for an overnight stay.

  • Dinner
Day 2 – Wengen

After a relaxed morning, we board the train to Basel, climbing into the majestic Swiss mountains for six nights in peaceful Wengen, a traffic-free mountain resort with breathtaking views over the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Gimmelwald

After some free time to get to know your surroundings, we transfer to nearby Gimmelwald, where we visit a working farm home to calves, cows, goats and pigs. We'll hear what it's like to be a farmer in the mountains, meet the free-range animals and learn about how they produce organic meat and dairy products, before getting to try these local specialties for ourselves. Back in Wengen, you may like to pick up one of the many mountain trails that begin in the village. The early 19th century saw an influx of wealthy visitors flocking to the timber chalets and Belle Epoque charm of this idyllic destination, and ever since it's been a haven for nature lovers and hikers.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 – The Wengen-Männlichen Cableway

We travel on this innovative cableway, originally built in 1954 to connect Wengen with the mountains. Within five minutes, the difference in altitude reaches 9,744 feet and we arrive in Männlichen, where sensational views can be admired from the café. After some time to look around, we continue to Grindelwald aboard Europe's longest gondola cableway. This pretty Alpine village is one of Europe's oldest mountain resorts. Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, there are many popular walking paths in the area or you may just like to explore the town, visit some shops and relax in one of the cafés.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - The Jungfrau Railway

We enjoy a highlight of our holiday today, a journey along the Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch. We climb from Kleine Scheidegg into a tunnel cut right through the Eiger, pausing at observation stops along the way for spectacular views of the valley below. Trundling past iconic mountains and alongside glacial lakes we navigate our way to places no other form of transport can reach. Viewing windows in the rock reveal snippets of what to expect at the top, where the scenery is nothing short of staggering. The azure blue of a crisp Swiss sky combines with the sharp white of high-altitude snow and the lush green of the summer hills. With free time at the summit station, the highest in Europe, you could explore the Ice Palace or visit the Sphinx Terrace for superb views across the Aletsch Glacier.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - The Schilthorn and Trümmelbach Falls

An excursion by cable car takes us to the summit of the Schilthorn, home to a revolving restaurant that features 360 degree views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Named Piz Gloria in honour of the James Bond film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', there are many 007 references to spot. Following some free time, we visit the Trümmelbach Falls. Nestled deep in a canyon, these falls have carved a path for themselves through the hillside, making them Europe's largest subterranean waterfalls and the only glacial waterfalls accessible by underground lift, galleries, tunnels, paths and platforms.

  • Breakfast
Day 7 - Wengen

Today is free to use your included Swiss Travel Card to explore the area. You could journey up to Schynige Platte, travelling in restored 19th-century carriages, or take a ride on the Brienz Rothorn Railway, one of the steepest in Switzerland and powered almost entirely by steam. Beginning in the lakeside town of Brienz, the rack-and-pinion line traverses a number of bridges, crossing steep, stony mountain trails as it continues to climb. For much of the route, the glittering waters of Lake Brienz can be seen, and before long, we reach the first of three passing loops for oncoming locomotives. The end of the line comes at the summit of Rothorn, 7,362 feet above sea level.

  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8 - Wengen and London

After breakfast, we leave Wengen, taking the train to Paris via Interlaken and Basel. Here, we connect with the Eurostar service back to London St Pancras.

  • Breakfast

Sweitzerland was so pretty. Their trains were clean and bright and their staff at local level were very pleasant. Our hotel was full of character but was too far up the hill in Wengen.

Good travel arrangements and an excellent tour manager.the main disappointment was the food in the hotel in Wengen. Poor selection, poor quality and poorly presented. At both breakfast and dinner it was a case of help yourself at a buffet. Ounce a couple of guests had served themselves the trays became a mess.

It was an excellent holiday. Great tour manager who read the group well. Good pace considering the age range. The hotel staff were friendly, polite, helpful. The accommodation was clean, and comfortable - also a little quirky in keeping with the hotel's age; I loved it. Adding positively to the experience - it was a good mix of people. An impressive set of firsts for my first ever group travel.
