Oberammergau and Lake Garda

“We had the tour of a lifetime. The Passion Play was mesmerising in every aspect, and was the highlight of the tour. Nonetheless, our Lake Garda stay was very memorable with a visit to the stunning city of Verona, followed by a wine tasting and meal at a winery in Valpolicella. A speedboat ride across the southern end of Lake Garda to Isola de Garda proved unmissable with a tour around the estate, gardens and time for canapes and drinks. I already miss the sheer beauty of the mountains in Italy and Bavaria. Our tour group were equally wonderful with our lovely Tour Manager Rosalinde Smith. Thank you for such an unforgettable experience.

Oberammergau and Rhine Cruise

“A superb holiday let down slightly by the "Butlins" approach of the Cruise Directors. The initial Tour Director (Philip Obell) was first class, as a guide he was brilliant but he really came into his own when issues arose with the health of one tour participant. His calm manner and approach resolved some very complicated issues. I cannot praise him highly enough. Sadly the Cruise Directors seemed to think the Cruise Participants needed to be jollied along. Not the approach I and other participants either wanted or needed. There were also ageist and sexist comments. Of a more suspect issue was the decision not to broadcast announcements into cabins, as not everyone was in communal areas. The boat crew were brilliant. One criticism of the boat was the lack of a lift to the very top deck. For persons of limited mobility this was unacceptable in a boat built less than 3 years ago.

Passion Play Theater

The history

During the Thirty Years War, Oberammergau was afflicted by the 'Black Death', along with much of Europe. As the town's population dwindled, the local government vowed that they would perform the 'Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ' every ten years if God was to spare them from the plague ravaging the region. The death rate slowed to a halt and the following year, the townsfolk performed the first Passion Play on a stage erected above the graves of their countrymen who had been claimed by the deadly disease. The Oberammergau villagers believed that they had witnessed a miracle, and have held up their end of the pledge ever since, performing the Passion Play 41 times so far with 2020 marking the 42nd time these experienced performers will take to the stage.
