Theres free time to explore before dinner. Day 3The Toy Train to ShimlaWe leave Delhi on the Shatabdi Express to Kalka, then board the narrow-gauge railway, the Toy Train. We pass through the Shivalik foothills of the Himalayas on our way up to Shimla, once the summer capital of the British Raj, for two nights. You may choose to make this journey by car. Day 4ShimlaToday we hear a talk from author and historian Raaja Bhasin, who has spellbinding stories of his home town, Shimla. Our sightseeing tour takes in Shimlas colonial heritage, including the Viceregal Lodge. We lunch on Shimlas famous Mall, with time to explore the historical buildings.Days 5-6AmritsarWe travel by train to Armitsar, one of the holiest centres for the Sikh religion, for two nights. On day 6, we witness the changing of the guard ceremony at the Wagah Border, between India and Pakistan. After dinner, theres a chance to experience the devotional Palki ceremony at the Golden Temple. Day 7Old Amristar, the Golden Temple and DelhiOur day begins with a walk through Old Amritsar to the Golden Temple. We visit markets, learn about the Sikh religion and catch glimpses of local life. The Golden Temple is the spiritual centre of the Sikh faith, built of white marble and copper with a golden dome - its kitchen feeds thousands of people every day. We visit Jallianwala Bagh, a sombre memorial of one of the darkesteventsinIndianhistorywhenBritishtroopsopenedfireonpeacefulcelebrators on Punjabi New Year. We continue to Delhi for two nights. Day 8Old DelhiToday we explore fascinating Old Delhi. We visit the World Heritage Site, Qutub Minar, an exquisite minaret, then walk through the tranquil ArchaeologicalPark,seeingmonumentsfrommanydifferenteras.Wevisitthe Gandhi museum, then drive past India Gate, the Parliament Complex and the Rashtrapati Bhawan. We walk through the 16th century heritage park, Delhisfirstarboretum,thenwanderthroughOldDelhi,experiencingwaftingaromas and local culture, to the Jama Masjid mosque. After a rickshaw ride in busy Chadni Chowk, our day ends with a divine dinner at Haveli Dharampura, enjoying superb delicacies and rich Mughal cuisine in an ethnic ambience. Day 9The Maharajas ExpressToday we board one of the worlds most luxurious trains, The Maharajas Express,forasixnightjourney.OurfirststopisthePinkCityofJaipur,wherewe visit the City Palace galleries. We dine at the beautiful Rambagh Palace Hotel, once home of the Maharaja of Jaipur.Day 10Jaipur & the Amber FortWe visit Jaipurs glorious Amber Fort - a blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture, in red sand stone and white marble. Its exterior hides an inner paradise of beautiful art and architecture. A jeep takes us up to see the royal apartments, and striking views of the gorge. There is a range of optional activities such as a hotel spa or a private guided tour of the city.Day 11Ranthambore National Park and Fatehpur SikriToday starts with an early safari to the Ranthambore National Park, once the private hunting ground of the Maharajas, and a National Park since 1973.
