Centovalli Railways

The Centovalli Railway was originally planned to connect Locarno in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland with Domodossola in the very north of Italy. The line's opening was delayed considerably owing to the First World War, but construction was resumed almost immediately afterwards and the first services began in 1923.

The railway's name means "One Hundred Valleys", which is taken from the many valleys that the line crosses and passes through on its route. The line's passenger numbers dwindled following the Second World War, but it has remained open continually, having now become a much-loved tourist attraction.

“We've been with Great Rail three times before. Blessed with good weather and a particularly good Tour Manager we had an excellent time on this trip. The hotels we're good and travel arrangements as good you'd expect from Great Rail. We enjoyed our time in St Moritz, but Zermatt was the real highlight so we're glad our tour went to Zermatt last. Colmar on the way home was a delightful surprise and we may well return for a weekend. Very pleased with this holiday.

“Prior to departure we’d received telephone call and detailed itineraries from tour guide. However, due to last minute illness we were greeted by a new tour guide at St Pancras. Camille literally only had 18 hours notice and proved to be excellent. First evening in Turin, hotel was very good as was the food. Unfortunately we were told, together with 4 other couples, just prior to our arrival at our main hotel at Lake Orta that the lake view rooms we’d paid to upgrade to were not and never had been available that week due to a pre booked wedding. Disappointment was an understatement. Due to hotel being completely full we had no alternative but to stick with allocated rooms which were extremely dark and at back of hotel. At the start of our holiday this had a massive impact on our enjoyment. However, purely down to Camille and her handling of the situation with the hotel and Great Rail Journeys we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Despite some last minute changes to the itinerary all trips were well organised with plenty of free time to enjoy the beautiful lakes. Special mention is needed for Alberto, the owner of Hotel Bocciolo and all his team who were absolutely charming, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Regarding the food, we would describe it as simple but nicely cooked. Breakfast was exceptional! Great Rail have subsequently apologised and are in process of refunding cost of upgrade together with a goodwill gesture. We have booked another trip with them.
