Cairngorm Mountain Railway

The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is just over a mile in length, running from the base to the summit of Cairn Gorm, the peak that gives its name to the entire mountain range and even the surrounding National Park.

Our journey on the broad-gauge line begins at the base station, not far from Aviemore. From here, Scotland's only funicular train begins its eventual ascent of 6,460ft. During the trip, the view of the surrounding mountains and the Highland scenery is tremendous, with a dramatic vista over the sprawling valley below. Shortly afterwards we reach the middle station, which is often used by walkers and those taking part in winter sports as the season allows. Continuing our ascent, the Cairngorm Mountain Railway reaches the passing loop, a short double-track section which allows the descending train to pass safely. We then climb higher still; on this stretch of the line the landscape is wonderful, though at this height the weather can be adverse. To safeguard the railway from the most extreme winds, the line then enters a short tunnel before emerging at the top station, also known as Ptarmigan. Here you can enjoy the panoramic views on offer - or send a postcard from Britain's highest postbox!
