About the tour

Experience the English Riviera at its very best aboard two heritage railways, a river cruise and a journey along the Dawlish Coast by rail. Torquay provides the perfect base, set among seven green hills and famous for its grand Victorian villas and terraces gazing out to sea.


What’s included


Day 1 - Meet the group in Torquay

As you arrive in Torquay your Tour Manager will be waiting to greet you in the reception of the Grand Hotel. Set in 25 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and woodlands, this hotel offers an ideal location for a relaxing break. Upon arrival you may want to take a stroll through the extensive parklands or simply enjoy the hotel's luxurious leisure facilities.

Day 2 - The Riviera by steam train and boat

Today we explore Torbay's splendid coastline, beginning with a boat cruise down the river between Totnes and Dartmouth. After some free time to explore the elegant riverside town of Dartmouth, we cross the Dart Estuary by ferry on the short journey to Kingswear. Here we board the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway which takes us along the scenic Devon coastline and the tranquil River Dart to Paignton. Enjoy the views of the beautiful sand-fringed shoreline beaches, passing colourful beach huts and the sparkling azure of the beautiful English Channel, and discover the wonderful ribbon of the River Dart, lined with verdant forests and idyllic woodlands.

Day 3 - At leisure

Today you have a free day to explore Torquay at your leisure. Why not take a stroll along the town's charming seafront, following the 'Agatha Christie Mile'? You could perhaps visit the striking Torre Abbey, or visit the quaint Babbacombe Cliff Railway, admiring the spectacular coastal views.

Day 4 - The Dawlish Coast

This morning we take a scenic rail trip along the coast to Dawlish. After some free time, we transfer to Buckfastleigh where we join the South Devon Railway for a journey by steam along the valley of the River Dart. Built in 1872 this heritage line runs from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. Sit back and relax as we enjoy a picturesque return trip. Tonight, we gather to enjoy a farewell meal to celebrate the end of our tour.

Day 5 - Farewell to Torquay

After breakfast we say our farewells and you are free to depart Torquay at your own leisure.

Recommended Airport

We recommend that for this tour you arrange flights to and from Bristol Airport, which is approximately 86 miles from your base in Torquay.

Departure times

You may check in at the first hotel on your itinerary anytime after 14:00; your Tour Manager will be available between 16:00 and 18:00. However, if you are arriving later, you can meet your Tour Manager before dinner from 19:00.

The hotel was due to close at the end of the month and had acquired a run down appearance.
