Lake Trasimeno

Being just slightly smaller than Lake Como, Lake Trasimeno is one of Italy's most popular and largest lakes. The lake was formed about three million years ago, when a depression formed by geologic fractures drained what was a shallow sea across Umbria into a much smaller space. For thousands of years afterwards, the lake was still much larger than it is today; for a long time it extended almost as far as Perugia. This is unusual considering no major river flows directly into or out of Lake Trasimeno.

Beside Lake Trasimeno
Like Italy's other large lakes, Trasimeno is dotted with the ruins of medieval castles, built by warring factions attempting to defend their land. These historic monuments, along with the beautiful lakeside views, have ensured that the lake remains a popular tourist attraction. One of the main resorts on the lake is Passignano, with its wonderful historic Old Town that rises up the hillside from the shores of the lake. A church sits at the highest point of town - a steep but highly rewarding climb from the lakeside, which enjoys fantastic views across the lake and surrounding region.
