Konigswinter

Set on the right bank of the Rhine, the charming town of Königswinter enjoys a location at the foot of the pretty Siebengenirge Hills, with Drachenfels being the closest peak. The town dates back to about the 9th century, believed to have grown as a settlement of the nearby Abbey of Prüm. It is also rumoured that the town earned its name (meaning 'King's Winter') from Charlemagne, who allegedly spent some of his winters here.

In later years Königswinter continued to grow and became something of a religious centre - in addition to the churches in the town, there is also Heisternach, a ruined abbey inside the forest. With the coming of the railway the town developed as a tourist attraction, as people came to take the Drachenfels Railway to the castle ruins on the hillside. Today this charming riverside resort still remains very popular with visitors, with plenty of natural charm to recommend it.
