Come summer or winter our lakes and mountains holidays have an adventure suitable for everyone.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, nature takes centre stage. And Europe boasts scenes that can be much more dramatic than we're used to in Great Britain.
The Alps extend across several European countries, providing stunning views of charming villages nestled in deep valleys and forests, flowering alpine meadows that eventually turn into rugged mountains surrounded by snow-covered embankments and icy glaciers.
In contrast the great lakes of Italy provide no less drama, but
perhaps a tad more sedate (without all the high-altitude thrills).
Lake Maggiore is based in the pretty town of Stresa and offers the
opportunity to really explore the area, from the delightful
Borromean Islands to the spectacular heights of the Centovalli Railway. It's such a good-looking destination in fact, that even Napoleon Bonaparte had a soft spot Lake Maggiore, apparently ordering the building of a road through the lake due to its strategic position. According to legend, he claimed he had never seen such beauty and wanted to have access to this "wellspring of happiness."
